Family Matters is an AU of an AU, sort of. Like the Little Britches AU, it's about an adult Buck and Chris finding and eventually adopting child versions of Vin and JD. There are some differences such as the basic premise being a little different and of course, FM is slash, while LB is (rather adamantly) not, but mostly FM deals with slightly "older" topics. While LB fanfics are mostly set while JD and Vin are very young, FM seems to focus on their teen years.
I have to admit that neither LB nor FM is my cup of tea: I like my boys all grown up, darnit. But it's fairly popular in the slash circles, and well worth checking out.
The story I'm reccing here is technically a prologue. FM was started by Stan Lee, but he opened up the sandbox and let others play with him. Charlotte Hill went and wrote a story that sets up the FM universe and shows how the four ended up together.
