Why this must be read:
I figured you could never be amiss starting off with a pornier rec.
This is a short story where Dan considers Duck and how he fits into Wilby's society. This leads to realizations into how Duck fits himself to Dan and how Duck and Dan have changed and grown together over the months since the day of the movie. The author nicely delivers the punch of a story seemingly all about Duck revealing a truckload about Dan. It is fabulous and hot, yet thoughtful and sentimental.
It takes Dan months to discover what he realizes is an essential truth about Duck.
It isn't the voyeurism thing. That's been there all along. Even back before he knew Duck's name, it had been something else to stand against a tree and jerk off while Duck stood against his own tree, watching and stroking in matching rhythm.
No, what it is is that Duck's as much a part of Wilby as the Watch is. He's as necessary as the ferry. He's as quietly pervasive as the island's single radio station. "
