Why this must be read:
John risking his life for the people of Atlantis is entirely canon, but Rodney has to deal with the after-effects this time, and Rodney? Is not so good at dealing with losing John. Of all the ways in which John and Rodney could get together (barring them being marooned on a planet alone or some sort of mind-link), this way makes the most sense at this point in the series.
This is sort of a death story, and sort of not...don't avoid it out of fear of angst, because it's canon-like and amusing as well as touching.
