Why this must be read: Canon doesn't give us much on Giles life before Sunnydale or his family. We know his father and grandmother were both Watchers. We know he had a rebellion in his early twenties that involved Ethan Rayne. We know that the rebellion ended badly with the raising of Eyghon and the death of Randall. But there is plenty we don't know, which leaves much to an author's imagination.

Kivrin takes us back to just after the disaster that led to Randall's death. She tells us exactly what happened and how Randall died, which gives the reader incredible insight to who Giles is. She also shows us the elder Giles', Rupert's mother and father. Too many times I've seen author's fall into the trap of describing Rupert's parents as evil or bad, not Kivrin. She gives us loving parents who help young Rupert through a trying time. An excellent story full of wonderful imagery that gives the reader a better understanding of Rupert Giles.
