The Great Baseball Prodigy of Caribou Cove by Susanna Starz (PG)

Why this must be read: It's a William fic, about how he discovers his parents and his own role in the coming Colonization. There are several of these around, but this one is definitely my favorite. William's adopted parents are very realistic, likeable people, which you don't always see. William himself is pretty mature, but still recognizably a kid. He also has certain abilities, like telekinesis and seeing ghosts--including who he calls his "dead godfathers", Frohike, Langly, and Byers, who play a major part in the fic--but both the abilities and the roles of the Lone Gunmen and other ghosts are handled very well.

This isn't about Colonization, per se. It's about the events leading up to Colonization as an adult William, the established hero, tells a reporter about his background before he emerged as that hero. It's very well done, and definitely an enjoyable read.

The three ghosts were lined up behind the backstop, cheering. William was always amused to see his teammates standing behind the ghosts, looking out, never realizing what stood inches away from their faces.

As he wound up and delivered another pitch, he realized that something was wrong. Both Frohike and Langly were cheering exuberantly, but Byers looked nervous. His eyes were fixed on a spot past William, out in left field.

Unable to turn around mid-pitch, William did the only thing he could think to do in order to get a look at the outfield. He delivered a fastball dead center over the plate, exactly where he knew the chubby batter liked it. The boy swung, hard, and knocked the ball deep into left field.

William turned to watch, feigning dismay, and saw a figure in a dark suit walking slowly across the grass. He turned towards the umpire, certain he would throw the offender out, but the other man did not seem to notice.

The boy in left field, running for the baseball, ran right *through* the intruding man.

William sighed. Another ghost. This explained why the others weren't responding to the intrusion. As he watched, the ghost reached into his pocket and drew out a packet of cigarettes, lighting one. He puffed ghostly vapors as he strolled across the field.

Thanks for reccing this, this *is* a brilliant fic.

I sort of lost touch with the X-Files fandom because it started to air irregularly here in The Netherlands, and at very late times.
