Title: A Common Dilemma by Ren
Pairing: Leroy Jethro Gibbs/Donald 'Ducky' Mallard. Silver/Steel

Why this must be read:
Ren is the only other writer I know who not only writes about both Gibbs/Ducky and Silver/Steel as individual pairings, but also crossovers. As such A Common Dilemma seemed the natural crossover story to choose from the various excellent Gibbs/Ducky crossovers out there.
The story is told in two parts: the first from the point of view of Silver and Steel, the second from the point of view of Gibbs and Ducky. Each part looks at the relationship of the couple and how it has developed over the time they have been together. The story shows how regardless of whether you are human or not, there will always be external obstacles to be overcome in any lasting relationship. We are shown four men, very much in love, two human, two 'elements', focussing on their own relationship and pondering about the nature of the other couple. The story is rich with lasting affection, love, an element of 'perfection' and what it would be like if . . . and yet it all very believable. The four men never actually meet; in fact they have no idea who the other couple are, however, Ren leaves us with the certainty that if they did, they would get along. She keeps all four characters very much in character and as individuals, and despite Steel and Ducky being played by the same actor, they are not the same character. There is a mixture of emotion in the story, most of it happy, but there is more than a touch of sadness, poignancy and wistfulness.
From Part One
“Steel, don’t you wish we were like them?” asked Silver, as he and his lover watched a couple, kissing openly in the surroundings of New York City’s Central Park
Steel’s eyebrows lifted, and he grunted. “In regards to what?” he delivered back.
“Their life span, their love for each other, so uncomplicated, they live, grow old, and then they die.” Silver turned his gaze from the couple back to Steel. “Their love is precious as their time is so limited. The whole focus is on how much time they have.”
“Whereas we are unhindered by it.” returned Steel.
“Exactly.” Silver gave a grin, as he changed his stance folding his arms against his body, and leaning into his partner. “We can almost be languid, fickle even about our relationship. We can live almost forever. Does our love for each other mean any less?”
“I would rather presume that our length of life would be interpreted as something to be appreciative of, rather than an encumbrance.” Steel remarked. He in turn was focusing his blue gaze on the couple.
“Yes but the implication that their time is limited, makes their love much more precious.”
“Are you implying that our relationship and our values of it are meaningless?” Steel gave Silver an extremely cold stare.
Silver looked apologetically at his long time lover. And as if to placate the fair-haired Field Operative, he brushed his hand slowly down the blond’s blue suited arm and drew the alloy element closer, near enough to place a brief kiss on the soft skin under the small ear of his beloved.
“Our relationship is precious to me, I am sorry if you thought I was demeaning our love. It’s just that …”
“We are not human Silver.” Steel interrupted “We have different values; we may look human in appearance.” Silver smirked in reply. “However,” Steel continued. “We are beyond human capabilities. They are not only restricted as a consequence of time, but other matters too. I do not consider myself to be envious of their shortcomings.”
“I too am thankful for my qualities.” Silver replied winking at his lover. “And yet I wonder what it would be like to grow old together, to watch the ages pass on the face of the one I love.
Steel gave a snort of disgust at Silver’s words.
“The pain of seeing your partner die. To then leave you to live out the rest of your life miserably and alone.” He gave a small laugh “I think not.”
From Part Two
“Jethro, are those two young men still spying on us?” Ducky Mallard whispered in his lover’s ear, as he gently nibbled on the fleshy lobe.
“Ahh yes Duck.” Jethro Gibbs replied with difficulty. Well you would to if your lover was nibbling at a rather sensitive part of your ear..
“Enjoying what they are seeing then dear?”
“Hmmmmmmmm.” was all Gibbs was capable of replying.
“Shall we give them a show dear?” Ducky replied, devilment clear in his voice.
“Ehh what?” Gibbs finally spoke, having been immersed in pleasure at Ducky’s public show of affection.
“Those young men behind us, you can’t miss them, dressed like city brokers. Poor boys they must be sweltering in this heat.” Ducky said in a sympathetic tone. Gibbs managed to surreptitiously turn round to scrutinize the two young men behind him.
He noticed that they stood close to one another, so close they were in each others personal space. Gibbs was extremely good at observing people and being an expert at body language, he could guess that these two men had a very close relationship with each other.
He surmised that they were lovers. The smaller of the two was blond, his light blue twin breasted suit emphasising the hair colour, the length brushing against the collar, and eyes almost hidden by overlong bangs. Standing very close to him was a taller man, standing extremely straight, wearing a grey suit with a waist coat, reddish curly hair blowing lightly in the refreshing breeze.
Both seemed to have ended their own observations, and were now concentrating very much on themselves. Gibbs smiled when the blond stroked the arm of the redhead, in an almost nervous gesture, as if afraid of being found out.
