Why this must be read:
Written for last year's Don We Now Our Gay Apparel holiday story exchange, this story has a lot of dialogue that is snappy and engrossing and that really keeps the story flowing from section to section. I particularly love the gradual building of Nick and Howie's relationship and their awareness of it. Plus, the other boys haven't been neglected and the opening scene between Kevin and Howie is one of my favorites.
"You need to do what, Nicky?" Brian asked, and Nick could see him trying his best not to giggle himself silly.
"Find myself." Nick's reply was even-toned and adamant. "And, don't call me Nicky."
"Dude. You've been all over the world. You haven't found yourself, yet? Where exactly is it that you think you're hiding?"
Nick was trying really hard to be patient. "Well, that's kind of the problem, Brian. I don't have a fucking clue."
"Well, first things first there, Nick. You might get people to take your plight more seriously if you didn't sound like every guy from every teen movie ever made. Though, really, if you were, you'd probably have found yourself by now, huh? They all seem to find themselves in Europe. And, you've already looked there."
Nick just rolled his eyes at Brian. "Are you finished?"
"Just about. When I tell people this story, do I have your permission to use the words "existential crisis"? Because that makes it so much better." Brian paused. "Okay, I'm done." He made a somber expression. "This is my serious listening face. What's up, bro?"
