Why this must be read: Another casefile, and a Mulder profiling story, but this one is set from an outsider's point of view, from a clerk who works in Violent Crimes when Mulder is called in on a consult. And Chandra Jones is a great OC, one with a life of her own beyond watching Mulder and Scully work--and even though I read fic for more Mulder and Scully, I liked Chandra enough that I didn't mind reading about her life as she observes this case.

This fic has a lot of dramatic irony--though that's par for the course for outsider POV fics. Chandra observes enough to be disturbed, but not enough to fully understand. This takes place in mid-fourth season, so one can see hints of Scully's cancer, but Chandra doesn't realize how serious it is, though she does see its effects on Mulder. I like the subtlety. The case is gruesome without going overboard, and could almost be an X-File. And while the focus is not on Mulder and Scully's partnership/friendship, the moments where that does take center stage are really well-done, perfectly in keeping with where they are at this stage in the series. It's just a well-written fic in all of its genres.

I picked up the styrofoam plate of what had euphemistically been labelled macaroni and cheese in the cafeteria. Shuddering with revulsion, I dropped the glutinous mess into the trash.

"Looks better than what I had for dinner."

If I hadn't been so tired I'm sure I would have jumped higher. As it was, my reaction was enough to elicit a chuckle from Agent Mulder.

"You *really* ought to consider making the switch to decaffeinated," he teased, perching himself on the corner of my desk.

"Not on your life, it's the only thing keeping me going," I replied wryly. "How was your trip? And where's Agent Scully?"

A dark shadow crossed his face and the light went out of his eyes, making them seem even older at that moment than I had yet seen them. "I dropped her off at home. She's... been feeling a bit under the weather lately. Probably some bug."

"I'm sorry to hear that. I hope she gets better soon."

"So do I," he said bleakly. I watched as he studied the floor, his face grim. True, I had pegged him as a brooder, but his reaction to his partner's virus was much more extreme than I would have expected. Unless they were more than partners...or unless it was more than a virus.... I remembered her earlier exhaustion and wondered if I'd brought something up I should have left alone.
