Why this must be read: This long, complex story is one that will get to you since the first word. When talking of this story I often say that it’s not even important for you to have watched the show to enjoy it. This story is epic. The Seven move in a world that is changing, where cowboys and gunslingers, scoundrels and con men are becoming romantic anachronism. The author weaves in it, beautifully and heartbreakingly, the History of the People, historical figure like Crazy Horse, the tragic destiny of the proud Lakota. The characterization is sublime, the plot gripping. I don’t think there are words good enough to praise this story, the only advice I can give you is to read it.

Vin wondered how he could pull one thread out of the complicated loom of his past, and now the shaping pattern of his future, that would be enough to make Chris understand why he would lie to him now. Because he'd know it eventually. What he'd been even so young, what he'd done and what had been done to him, what she meant in that time of his life when all he'd seen was shades of gray. Yes, he'd finally been free and self-sufficient, welcome at the Lakota camps, loved even ... but he'd been so alone, battered and broken and wrung out so dry that he'd felt invisible. How did he explain that the color of her smile had been bright as hope when he'd had none of his own? How did he keep this man, any of them, as a friend after this was done? That was more important to him than he'd ever realized. They were all at risk from both the Lakota at war and the government that would assume they shared his treason.

You broke my heart :-) I'm signed for April and it was wanting to rec this story that motivated me to volunteer.

The only thing better than a great story is a great long story. Painted Eyes creates a world you don't want to leave and people whose lives you want to share. All of the Seven are true to character and have their opportunities to shine. So do Mary and Orin Travis. The Original characters, villains and good guys both, are well rounded and real. Long and poetic as it is, this story contains no filler. It moves briskly.

Smilla is right - you don't need to be familiar with the TV series to love this novel. You are cheating yourself if you miss it.

For those of you who prefer to read stories in hard copy, I have 'Moved by Silent Hands' formatted for print, much like a zine, with two columns per page, headers and footers. Believe me, this is one you will want to have and keep. You will be reading it more than once. It's 434 pages long. I'm told it is more than 1000 pages if printed from the web.
