Consider the Seahorse by Carene (NC-17)

Hi, I'm [livejournal.com profile] dorothy1901, and I'm driving the Highlander van this month. I've put together a diverse list of stories to rec: gen, slash, threesome, darkfic, crackfic, whatever, and I'm starting with the crackfic. Let's see: the Richie/Methos slash, or the mpreg? ::flips coin:: Mpreg it is!

Fandom: HIGHLANDER
Pairing: Duncan/Methos/Amanda
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] carenejeans
Author Website: The Garret

Warning: MPREG!

Why this must be read: Since all Immortals are sterile, Highlander mpreg is twice as unlikely as "normal" mpreg, and an explanation requires twice as much hand-waving. This is why Nature gave us two hands.

Methos discovers he is pregnant. An appropriate explanation is hand-waved into existence:
"Forget about Elvis! This is serious!"

"What's serious?"

"Me! Pregnant!"

"That'd be serious all right. Because you see, Methos," Duncan leaned forward, "you-- are-- a-- man."

"A five-thousand-year-old man. Immortal. An anomaly any way you look at it. Who knows what happens to a body after five thousand years? Maybe I'm due for a change."

In the story, intelligent, reasonable characters do intelligent, reasonable things in response to the situation. However, since the situation is so absurd, their responses are also absurd, such as having Methos dress in drag because a pregnant man would be too conspicuous. The writer deftly underscores these absurdities by inserting mundane passages from a pregnancy manual at key points.

Regular Check-ups Are Important: Finding a physician you like and trust can make a big difference to your well-being.

"Of course, you've seen a doctor," Duncan said. More than a little sarcasm crept into his voice.

"Mac, I can't see a doctor! I'd be laughed out of the office. I wouldn't even make it to the stirrups table."

...

Sex During Pregnancy: Pregnancy is a time of special closeness for couples. These feelings naturally include making love.

"So you have a womb. What about the rest of it?"

"What rest of it?"

Duncan looked at him.

"Oh, that. Well, sure. How else would the baby come out? Don't be dense."

"Ah, so you have the complete set. And that means--" He eyed Methos again, looking pointedly at his crotch.

Realization dawned on Methos's face. "Oh. OH no. You've tried to make a woman of me often enough, Duncan MacLeod of the Football Gang MacLeod. You're not going to make an actual woman out of me."

"Well, to hear you tell it, you already are a woman."

"Absolutely not! I'm still a man, MacLeod, and don't you forget it. If you want to fuck me you'll just have to get behind, man-to-man."

...

On the Road: During your sixth month of pregnancy, think about your safety while traveling.

"We should get him to holy ground," said Duncan.

Methos frowned. "I'm not a helpless female," he said, and then when Amanda and Grace looked sharply at him amended it to, "I'm not helpless."

On the one hand, the events of the story are developed in a way that makes them plausible (given the premise). On the other hand, having Methos invite Cassandra to the baby shower is still OMG Methos invited Cassandra to the baby shower, no matter how much sense it makes in context.

It's a fun, cracktastic story. Even if you don't like mpreg, why not give it a try? It's got humor, kind of a plot, threesome sex, a marriage of convenience, a baby, a swordfight, and some nice writing.
