Excerpt:

Late the next afternoon, Blair returned to their hut after spending the afternoon learning proper mediation techniques for vision quests. He was covered with sweat and paint, he smelled like smoke, and wanted nothing more than a trip down to the riverbank to rinse off. Instead he found another offering - dead monkey on a stick.

Blair was used to participating in strange rituals and eating unusual food, and was normally eager to try out new things, but he was ordinarily prepared for things like that. Coming upon the dead monkey so suddenly and without any warning was a shock. Blair backed away, covered his mouth in an attempt to hold back the gag, turned and ran straight into Jim.

“Jim!” Blair fisted his hands in Jim’s shirt - clean and damp, which meant that Jim had already had his bath after spending the day with the hunters - and dragged him over to the hut. Blair pointed. “Monkey! Dead monkey. On a stick.”
