Why this must be read: The Tenth Doctor nips back in time and becomes Ace's chemistry teacher, before his seventh incarnation has even met her. A terrific idea, very well done, which brings New Who and Classic Who together brilliantly. I've never seen any episodes with Ace in, but now I want to...

Why this must be read:

Originally I was going to recommend [livejournal.com profile] fourteencandles' What's Past, but then she posted
The Body Found, which, given my state of DADFJALKDFJALDJFALJ during and after reading it, well, I couldn't let go unrecced.

I don't know about you, but I've found that I love nothing so much as a long story that has the space and time to grow up into a remarkable being. "The Body Found" does just that; it is long, ponderous, and at the same time, reading it goes by in a flash.

Wilson goes missing and, well, you can imagine what follows. We see how the characters recuperate from trauma: slowly, painfully, and with much confusion. This story really is about recovery and it hurts, it does; and part of that pain is hope. It's House & Wilson-centric with the rest of the cast playing important parts.

At 46,000 words, you may want to reserve a large block of time before starting-- because you won't want to stop midway.

Warning: Gathering story. This means major character death, there can be only one, yadda yadda.
Why this must be read: Writers of fan fiction have an advantage over the writers of original fiction: they can do anything, literally anything with the characters, without worrying about its effect on continuity. In fan fiction, you can change sexuality and/or gender and/or species, you can set the characters in a different time period, you can make them happy housewives or blow up the universe, and it has no effect on either canon or on other fan fiction stories. In the source material, the series writers can lead the characters into mortal danger, but then they have to lead them out as well, if they want the characters to continue. In fan fiction, the writers can take the characters up to that line, and then they can take them over it.

In Highlander, this means that it's possible to write a story about the Gathering where the characters are confronted with the question, "Who wouldn't you kill to survive?" and the answer can be, "No one."

In One Thousand, Methos would do anything to survive the Gathering. Anything at all.
