Kowalski by Pares (PG)
Fandom: Due South
Pairing: Kowalski/Stella, Vecchio/Stella
Author on LJ:
kormantic
Author Website: the ska lab
Why this must be read:
In some ways, this is sort of the other side of the coin to "Retired Guy Hobbies"; this is Stella's story, and though it's nominally Vecchio/Stella, it (not surprisingly, given the title) actually deals much more with her relationship with Kowalski, what it meant to her in the past and what it continues to mean to her. I know Stella isn't the most popular character in dS fandom, but I like her, and Pares has a wonderful take on her here, strong without being a bitch, practical without being in any way unfeeling. And there's a lovely Frannie cameo, too, all determined and perceptive and protective of her big brother.
An excerpt:
Stella Kowalski nee Palmer had taken Ray's name because she liked it; she liked how it sounded, she liked what it stood for. It was a blue collar Polack tough guy name. It came with Ray's tense shoulders, his boxing stance, that little wag of his head that said You wanna take a swing at me? And she'd wanted just a touch of that. There was more to being a lawyer than courtroom polish, and if she wanted to get anywhere, she'd need to have some Chicago steel under that string of pearls.
It had served her well, that touch of steel. Ray's cop face and her cool lawyer eyes and their last name.
