My Chemical Romance/Fall Out Boy (PG-13)

Title: As You Should Be

Why this must be read: This is an AU, and its premise is very simple: Mikey joins FOB instead of MCR, and he and Gerard don't talk for three years. When the bands end up on Warped together, Gerard becomes friends with Patrick. This fic is funny and romantic and sweet and silly, all at different times.

Once the tour gets rolling, Gerard finds out that Frank was right. It's not impossible to avoid people if you are careful and pay attention. Things sneak in, though. The heat and the traveling are wearing, and Gerard is caught completely off guard by a reporter's question about My Chem and Fall Out Boy being the most anticipated sets on the bill, and how does Gerard feel about the other group? He fumbles around with his words a bit and says he hasn't had time to see any shows yet. Which is a bald face lie. Gerard watches every Fall Out Boy show he can, and he used to record every television appearance. He watches his brother surreptitiously and glowers at Pete and Pete's too tight shirts and too white teeth. As much as he wants to deny's Mikey's very existence, he cannot, so he watches his brother from a distance. Frank once made an off-hand remark about this voyeuristic habit and Gerard punched him in the stomach so hard he threw up. Gerard felt pretty bad about that later and Frank, graciously, created a long list of tasks that, if done correctly, could qualify as penance. Gerard got all the way to "make Frank a delicious and inventive sandwich thrice weekly to be served with good cheer and exactly sixteen potato chips" before he decided forgiveness was overrated.

With such intense scruitiny of Mikey and Pete, it takes Gerard four live performances to notice the lead singer. Who does not look like he ought to be a lead singer at all. Who is short and pudgy and somewhat oddly dressed. Who is currently sitting beside Gerard outside the main activity of yet another impromptu post-show party. There is a bonfire, ridiculous in the heat, there are dozens of scrappy looking guys without shirts, and there are bottles everywhere. Gerard lingers because while most people know he no longer drinks, people tend to forget once they are drunk that abstinence does not allow "just one, man." So he is watching and smoking and finally notices the small man beside him, who acknowledges Gerard with a nod. "Hi, I'm Patrick," he says, pushing up his glasses and seeming, to Gerard's dismay, to settle into his spot on the grass a bit more firmly.
