Milk and Toast and Honey by Genee Li (PG-ish?)
Fandom: POPSLASH
Pairing: Nick/AJ
Author on LJ:
geneli4
Author Website: sparkle and shine
Why this must be read: The relationship between Nick and AJ and how it changes, from the beginning of Backstreet's career until the Never Gone tour, with Kevin playing a wonderful supporting role. This is the kind of bittersweet-with-a-good-ending story that has you almost in tears while you read it and leaves you feeling impossibly happy afterwards. Genee Li has a way with language that is uniquely her own and it makes this story even more worth reading.
Excerpt: Nick remembers the first time, back before they hit big, back before AJ started drinking and Brian got sick and everything went to shit and back again, he remembers waking up one afternoon, pale sun streaming through the hotel windows and a tiny black cat curled up on Kevin's lap, purring. Nick remembers Kevin's long fingers scratching softly under the cat's chin, remembers Kevin almost purring, too, his voice so soft, coaxing. "It's okay, babe," he'd said, "I got you," and Nick knew right then, because Kevin only used that voice with them and he could see Howie by the windows, phone pressed to his ear and Brian was sleeping behind him, one hand splayed on Nick's hip, soft breath on the back of his neck.
"AJ," Nick whispered, and Kevin looked up, green eyes narrowed so sharp Nick almost felt like a stranger. Almost, but the cat jumped down from Kevin's lap and stretched, blinking at Nick and meowing loudly.
