Odd-Numbered Nights by Salieri (PG)

Fandom: Due South
Pairing: Fraser/Vecchio(ish)
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] troyswann
Author Website: Outside the Box

Why this must be read:

In a comment to this fic, [livejournal.com profile] china_shop described as a "TARDIS story," and that strikes me as apt—it's a shorter piece, only a thousand words, but there is so much packed into every sentence that it is much more than it appears to be from the outside. This post-"The Deal" story absolutely vibrates with tension and emotion; Salieri's writing is so polished, so smooth and eloquent and understated, it just sweeps you away, gentle and inexorable. The slash is kept subtextual, but despite that… well, let's just say that I've tried to write my own fic-as-ship-manifesto for these two, and I should have just waited for Salieri to do it for me. It's beautiful.

An excerpt:

"You know, Benny, Frankie's a young guy. He could live to be ninety. You gonna spend the next 55 years guarding my house?"

Fraser breaks the post-card-Mountie-on-guard-for-thee pose and tugs at his ear. A smile creases his cheek before he remembers the fat lip and smooths his expression out again, so that when he speaks the grim amusement is all in the voice. "Well, no, Ray. I thought that on odd-numbered nights you could stand outside my place."
