The Animal I Wanted by Ladyluck (NC-17)
Fandom: THE X-FILES
Pairing: Mulder/Krycek
Author on LJ: Not to my knowledge.
Author Website: Not to my knowledge.
Why this must be read:
This massive novel is without a doubt, hands down, no questions asked, one of the most impressive pieces of fanfiction I've ever read. It is that rare thing, a story of how Mulder and Krycek go from enemies to lovers that is completely credible from start to finish - no glossing over, no white-washing, no rose-coloured glasses; just the truth of who these men are, what they have done to each other and what they want in their hearts. The romance is beautiful, moving, sad, funny, painful, violent, gentle, sexy and, above all, right, and, as if that's not enough, it's wrapped in a skillfully crafted plot safely grounded in the X-Files mytharc and featuring a full cast of the shows important characters.
While this is a story about Mulder falling in love with Krycek, it is also, as any great story told from Mulder's perspective should be, a tale of his love for Scully. It's at heart about three people, not two, and each of them is portrayed with affection and insight, with all their flaws and graces, heroic strengths and human frailties. Ladyluck achieves one of the most complex and, I think, accurate depictions in existence of the tangle of emotions that makes up the dynamic between Mulder and the people he can't live without. It's gorgeously done, it's exciting, it's riveting, and you're not going to want to stop reading until you reach the end.
This is fanfiction at its very best. Don't miss out on it.
