Why this must be read: “Gallow’s Bird” is a perfectly pitched ghost story--it would work on this level, even without any additional knowledge of the fandom.

Several decades after canon, the customers of a tavern, The Gallow’s Bird, discuss the rumor of a phantom haunting Port Royal. Everyone has a different take on the legend. One of the patrons, Jim, a sailor passing through, decides to unravel the mystery for himself.
Although written post-CotBP, this fic remains compatible with canon—and, perhaps, has added poignancy in light of At World’s End.
