Easing the Spring by Heather Phillips (NC-17)

Why this must be read:
Many of this month's recs are going to be of stories to which my reaction was "Oh, my God, this is the story about this subject that I wanted to write, only better." This is the first example, and it's a dilly. It's exactly, realistically difficult and painfully perfect and entire, the story I wanted concerning the Batfamily's Lost Year and especially Dick and Tim during that time. And, like many of the best fanfics, it weaves random shreds of canon into a coherent whole so that one can actually envision the characters as real human beings living through tough times.
Tim pauses minutely at Dick's door—and as soon as he's moving again, Dick's taking his shoulder, steering him back. He may be pushing, but maybe that's okay.
He's really pushing when he says, "You can talk to me, you know," in Tim's ear.
Predictably, the muscles under Dick's hand clamp down hard. "You—" Tim says. "Dick..."
And then his body relaxes. He turns, and his expression is more open than it's been in months, in years. "I know," Tim says. "And I will. If things ever get too bad, you're the first one I'll—"
"Nice try," Dick interrupts.
There's a short, cool pause. Then, with deliberate intent, Tim twists his shoulder out from under Dick's hand and reaches past him to pull the door shut. They're inches apart and in the dark again.
