12:41 pm A Modest Proposal by ignazwisdom (NC-17)
Hello Everyone. I'm Nell and I will be driving the House van this month. I will be rec'cing newer fics, older fics and every fic in-between. I prefer reading longer fics, but I will read anything so this is going to be a mixed bag of recs. I have a decided obsession with slash fics, but since I'm not OTP-ish in the slightest, y'all will get recs for everything from Chase/Foreman to Wilson/Foreman to Gen fics.

Why this must be read:

When I first read that the state courts were going to allow civil unions for gay couples, my first reaction was "Gods, the amount of crap that is going to hit fandom is NOT GOOD."

And than [livejournal.com profile] ignazwisdom posts this jewel of a fic. It is unbelievably awesome. It's long (56,000 words) and plotty and every sentence is necessary. It is the standard that all the other 'forced-to-marry' fics is and should be held up to.

Plus, I have a thing for fics that use quotes from the show as chapter titles - when used properly.

Here be an Excerpt that may seem long until it is considered that the fic is 56,000 words )

Why this must be read:
Many of this month's recs are going to be of stories to which my reaction was "Oh, my God, this is the story about this subject that I wanted to write, only better." This is the first example, and it's a dilly. It's exactly, realistically difficult and painfully perfect and entire, the story I wanted concerning the Batfamily's Lost Year and especially Dick and Tim during that time. And, like many of the best fanfics, it weaves random shreds of canon into a coherent whole so that one can actually envision the characters as real human beings living through tough times.

10:23 pm The Parking Permit by slwatson (G)
Fandom: DOCTOR WHO
Pairing: None

Why this must be read:

The Fifth Doctor makes the mistake of landing his TARDIS without a parking permit and gets himself arrested for his trouble. It's up to companion Nyssa to obtain the permit that will free the Doctor, where she discovers that red tape is worse than monsters everytime.

This charming fic made me laugh like a drain the first time I read it, and still makes me smile every time I re-read.

When she had found out the amount of the fine, she was absolutely positive that obtaining the permit would be far, far easier than trying to mortgage the entire planet it would take to come up with that kind of capital.

Two days more, making it five now by the galactic standard measure, and she wondered where she could find a planet she could conquer and sell. It went wildly against her own gentle nature, but the thoughts came unbidden anyway. Then she looked at the long paper number printout in her hand, and the ticker on the wall, and whimpered.

11:04 pm The Sign of Change by Katie (NC-1)
Fandom: SHERLOCK HOLMES
Pairing: Homes/Watson
Subcategory: First time; angst
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] katieforsythe
Author Website: unknown, but you can find her stories on her Live Journal

Why this must be read:
Katie writes in the proper Victorian English and in Sir Conan Doyle's style, so that you feel you are reading a canon story. But, of course Doyle never wrote slash. Katie does. Very well.

The story takes place just before Watson marries Mary Morstan (who creates great confusion in future generations of Holmes readers by calling Dr. John Watson by "James".)  It's just a few days before the wedding and Holmes is moping. Watson finally forces him to confess his problem, which leads to a night of passion and then distance.

There is a skeleton of a case here, but the story is basically a tale of Watson, the choices he must make and how three people end up paying the price for his confusion.

Looking back on my life, I can easily identify the two most callous and cruel acts I ever committed. One was my hasty departure. The other was my return.
