Why this must be read: When I first saw the author’s s description of this fic as, “Three ways the story could have gone,” I wondered why she didn’t just go for the full “five things” challenge. Then, upon reading it, I realized thatdollsome purposefully chose a moment in each of the three films when James/Elizabeth really could have worked out: if James had noticed Elizabeth fainting off the fort; if James and Elizabeth had met again in Port Royal after the hurricane; or if James had left the Dutchman with Elizabeth. This story left me floored, especially the final part.
What I find endlessly fascinating about James and Elizabeth is, unlike many fan fiction couples (and—hey, if you want to ship Marty/Swann, more power to you), they actually *could* have happened in canon. All you really have to do is change one thing, and the “what if’s” become “might have beens”.
