QaF focuses on the careers, ambitions, and relationships of a group of gay men living in Pittsburgh. Follow the lives of Brian, Michael, Justin, Emmett and Ted. Share their struggles and their triumphs; their loves and their losses.

LIBERTY AVENUE

Liberty Avenue is the home of most of the gay community in QaF. This is where most of the "magic" on the show happens.

The place to be on Friday and Saturday nights. Whether you're bumping and griding against a tight-bodied twink or getting a blow job in the backroom, your sure to have a night worth remembering.

THE CHARACTERS

Brian Kinney

By day Brian Kinney is a tough-as-nails ad executive who's not afraid to use his cunning or his sexuality to get what he wants. By night, he can be found prowling the backroom of Babylon for drugs, a blow job, a fuck, or all three. Brian is every fag's wet dream. He oozes sex and always gets what he wants. Brian doesn't do relationships or love because that's what "breeders" do. He likes to fuck because it gives you "the minimum of bullshit with the maximum of pleasure.

Well, until he met Justin Taylor.

Tenacious and determined, Justin wormed with way into Brian's life and eventually into Brian's heart.

The pair have an "unconventional and undefined relationship," in which either person stays

Brian has refused to stop tricking, but abides by "The Rules" that he and Justin have set-up.

The Rules
1. No kissing tricks.
2. No phone numbers.
3. No fucking the same guy twice.
4. Must be home by 3 A.M.

George Shickel called Brian "the love child of Ayn Rand and James Dean." That pretty much sums it up.

Michael Novotny

Michael, self proclaimed "semi-cute boy next door," mama's boy, and comic book freak. He owns his own comic book store and created his own comic book, Rage, with Justin.

Michael and Brian have been best friends since they were both fourteen
and Michael has always been Brian's main source of unwavering love and
support. The problem for Michael is that he's in love with Brian, but it doesn't look like Brian ever plans on changing his status from best friend to lover. It's been said, by most of the characters on QAF, that Brian's fucked everyone except Michael. It's not even clear that Michael would really want him to, seeing Brian's views on relationships, sex, and love.

This hasn't stopped Michael from pursuing relationships, though.

Michael is involved with Prof. Ben Bruckner, despite the reactions of his friends and family and his own initial reservations regarding Ben's HIV status.

Justin Taylor

One night, Justin set out down Liberty Avenue to see what it was all about. Underneath a streetlamp, Brian saw Justin, brought him home and took his virginity. With a lot of determination and patience he became part of Brian's small make-shift family. With some guidance from Brian, Justin was on his way to becoming "the best homosexual he could be."

One of the major decisions he made was to go Pittsburgh Institute of Fine Arts to pursue his passion for drawing instead of Dartmouth and honor his father's wishes.

Somehow, the blond twink stole the Teflon heart of Brian Kinney. Brian even went to Justin's prom. It was the most "ridiculously romantic" thing Brian had ever done for someone. Only the night was tainted by Chris Hobbs, who bashed Justin in the head with a baseball bat.

After Justin got out of the hospital, he and Brian tried to live together and "The Rules" were put in effect. It was short-lived though. Justin ended up leaving Brian for Ethan Gold, a musician at PIFA, because Brian wouldn't tell Justin how he felt about him.

Ethan was the antithesis of Brian. He knew how to do romance. He knew what to say and he had no problem telling Justin what he wanted to hear. Ethan wasn’t good at keeping his word, though, and cheated on Justin.

So, Brian and Justin got back together.

Their LOVE IS DESERVING OF ALL CAPS!!! <3<3<3

Emmett Honeycutt

Emmett, "courtier to disco trash" and web porn star turned event organizer. Emmett is tough, caring, and proud. In spite of his easygoing attitude, he knows how to stand up for those he cares about.

At the end of Season 2 Emmett got involved with his long time best friend Ted.

Ted Schmidt

Ted, former account and web porn king with a big heart and low self esteem. Ted was always lusting after hot guys who don't look twice at him until he fell for Emmett, his best friend, late Season 2. Recently, Ted got himself into deep trouble he after loosing his business. He hooked up with a shady doctor with nasty habit and got hooked on Crystal Meth.

Ben Bruckner

Ben, a HIV-positive Carnegie Mellon professor. He's a health nut that has a penchant for eastern food and religion. He's generally positive about is HIV status although he has had dramatic periods onscreen when he's felt otherwise. He is a sweet, understanding guy who doesn't feel threatened by relationship between Michael and Brian, for the most part.

Blake

Ted met Blake, a cute 20-something crystal meth addict, one night and ended up in a coma from a drug overdose.

Blake jumped ship but later reappeared and he and Ted hooked up. Despite vowing to go clean, Blake couldn't give up his addiction and eventually disappeared on Ted. He reappeared once again at the rehab clinic that Ted checks himself into, this time as a counselor.

Debbie Novotny

Debbie the loud and proud mother of Michael who works as a waitress in The Liberty Diner. Deb spends most of her time doling out advice to just about everyone who will listen. She has a habit of butting into everyone business, especially Michael's, something that drives him bonkers.

Lindsay Peterson

Lindsay, a WASPy ex-art teacher who now works in an art gallery. She's Brian's second best friend and the mother of his son, Gus. Lindsay tends to repress her feelings and that has lead to some problems between her and her longtime partner Melanie.

Melanie Marcus

nonsense Jewish lawyer. While she spares no love for Brian (the feeling is entirely mutual), she is friends with everyone else and is frequently called on whenever a lawyer is needed. During Season 3, she decided to bear her and Lindsay's second child, despite her many fears, and chose Michael as the father.

Hunter moved in with Ben and Michael and all was happy until his mother showed up wanting him back. Michael and Hunter took off at the end of Season 3 to avoid being forced to live with his mother. Gus <IMG src="http://www.stopawhile.com/Images/qaf/gus.jpg"> Lindsay and Melanie's rarely seen 3 year old son. Fathered, via artificial insemination, by Brian. He has been largely absent but frequently referred to since Season 1. Other Characters You May See in Fic: Ethan Gold - Ethan is a violinist. He wooed Justin with chocolate and proclamations of love, only to cheat on him a couple of months later. Carl Detective Horvath - Debbie met Det. Carl Horvath after she discovered a body in the dumpster behind Liberty diner. At first put off by him because of his lack of sensitivity towards gay people she eventually changed her mind about him. Debbie broke up with Carl after his refusal to reopen the case on Jason Kemp (Dumpster Boy) despite new evidence. Police Chief Jim Stockwell - Jim ran for mayor with the help of a fresh ad campaign thought up by Brian. In an effort to heighten his image of the All-American-Family-Man, Stockwell cleaned up all the bath houses and backrooms of Liberty Avenue address, and later was connected to the cover-up of Dumpster Boy. Dave Cameron - Michael met Dr. David, a divorced chiropractor in his early 40s, after he hurt himself accident at work. The two hit it off, despite Brian's jealousy and Michael's insecurities. Michael moved to Portland with David, but came back to Pittsburg  when things didn't work out. George Schickel - George, a wealthy, lonely, older business man, fell for Fetch Dixon, aka Emmett, while Emmett was working for Ted's website. They hit it off despite everyone's dismay at the age difference and were very happy until George died of a heart attack. Joan Kinney - Joan, called "The Warden", by her son, Brian, is a cold-hearted alcoholic and religious fanatic. When she became pregnant with Brian, her husband, Jack, tried to force her to get an abortion, but she refused. Brian was physically and emotionally abused by his father because of this, and Joan did nothing about it. She just recently found out that her son was gay and then told him that she didn't want to have anything to do with him because being gay was a sin and he was going to Hell. Joan added that she would pray for his soul. Jack Kinney - Jack, was a blue collar Irish working man. He liked to bowl, drink and beat his wife and children. Well, mostly Brian. It seems that Claire came out of the household relatively unscathed During Season 1, Jack confided in Brian that he had cancer and that he would be dying soon. Brian decided to come out to his father. At first, Jack didn't take the news well, but eventually he tried to make amends. Before he died, Jack got to meet his grandson, Gus. Claire Kinney - Claire is Brian's sister. She has two sons. Her eldest accused Brian of molesting him and stole some money as well as Brian's shell bracelet. Claire took her son's side and called the cops on her brother. Later, it came out that her son had lied to cover up the fact that he tried to blackmail Brian for money. Claire and Brian are now estranged Jennifer Taylor - Jennifer is Justin's mom. She is very supportive of her son's sexuality, and even joined the local chapter of PFLAG. She is also a real estate agent. Craig Taylor - Craig hates Brian Kinney, and blames him for Justin's sexuality. He even went so far as ramming into Brian's jeep in the middle of the night, and jumping him outside of Babylon. Craig made an ultimatum to Justin; either he plays straight or he leaves the house for good. Justin ended up leaving, but Craig lost more then his son. Not too much later, Jennifer divorced him. Molly Taylor - Molly is Justin's little sister. Gardner Vance - Vance was partners with Brian at the prestigious agency that he owns. Vance fired Brian after he found out that he and Justin had sabotaged the ad campaign for their most important client, Police Chief Jim Stockwell, who was running for mayor. Cynthia - Cynthia was Brian's brash assistant when he worked at Gardner Vance's agency Mayor Deekins - Deekins ran against Stockwell and won the election Eric - A frat boy who Justin befriended at Daphne's party. Justin took Eric's virginity. Todd - The infamous backroom bottomer, who has a scene every first episode except Season 3. Chris Hobbs - Chris Hobbs is a student at James Academy. He bashed Justin in the head with a baseball on his prom night. Wolfram - Ethan's cat. Daphne Chanders - Daphne is Justin's best friend. They live together in a small apartment. Leda - Melanie's motorcycle riding, tough, sexy ex. She showed up during Season 2 and stayed for quite a while. She built the girls a studio in the attic and hopped into bed with them before being told she was wearing out her welcome. She and the girls split on good terms Rita - Hunter's scheezy mother. According to Hunter, she put him to work out on the streets to supplement her income. She tracks down her little Jimmy (Hunter) when he is staying with Ben and Michael which prompts Michael to run off with Hunter in order to escape her Mysterious Marilyn - The psychic transvestite who shows up occasionally at Woody's to impart some knowledge to the guys. Devina Devore - Michael's father, a drag queen that went to high school with Debbie. Michael had always believed that his father was a dead Vietnam vet but found out differently in Season 2. Hank - David's 12 year old son. He came to visit David and Michael and despite Michael's fears he and Hank got along fine. They both loved comics Tracey - Michael ex-coworker. Tracey had a crush on Michael while he was in the closet and working at The Big Q. Tracey found out about Michael being gay due through Brian's manipulations but they parted friends The Petersons - Lindsay's prudish parents, they don't approve of Melanie and Lindsay. Their attitude prompted Lindsay to propose to Mel at her sister's wedding. Her parents later refused to help Melanie and Lindsay and with their wedding Guillome - Lindsay's French, gay co-worker and almost husband. When Melanie and Lindsay broke up during Season 1, Lindsay got the bright idea to marry Guillome so he could stay in the country and Lindsay would have someone to help her out. Needless to say, no one was keen on the idea, least of all Melanie and Brian.
