Why this must be read:

[livejournal.com profile] summer_smile doesn’t write enough fic. She just doesn’t. But every time she posts something, it’s a treat. She’s got this style to her writing, a way of making a fic almost a sensory experience in the way she brings the touch, the taste, the smell, the sound and the sight of a scene, that just pulls the reader in as though he or she were inside a virtual reality episode. And All This Land is no exception. From the very first, you experience Maggie Edmondson landing on New Caprica for a two-day pass to clear her head and renew her spirit.

In the author’s words, this fic is “the ‘Unfinished Business’ of Mags and Karl,” giving us a story of the relationship they had before the Cylons, before he was left behind on Caprica; giving us a glimpse of things when he showed up again, pregnant Cylon lover in tow. But even more than that, this fic gives us a glimpse of a secondary character who was supposed to be a one-shot but who turned out to have staying power in the BSG universe. It gives us some history for Racetrack and it gives us some history for the Colonies and Colonial customs and religion.

All This Land is a lovely story and even if you’ve never thought of Racetrack/Helo as a pairing, it’s worth a read if only for [livejournal.com profile] summer_smile’s writing and for the backstory she’s created for this fascinating universe.

She inhaled deeply, holding the breath for as long as she could stand it, then exhaled quickly, eager to fill her lungs with the fresh planet-side air again. Strands of hair slipped across her face as the breeze caught her ponytail and she scented the slightly metallic tang of the Galactica. It was wafting from her – from her hair, from her skin, from her BDUs – as old and stale and annoying as the cigarette smoke that lingered from a night spent playing triad in the rec room. After she set up camp, the first thing she’d do was head off to the lake and try to wash that smell away. Maybe, if she were lucky, the smell wouldn’t be the only thing she would wash away on this two-day pass...

Spoilers for Home 2 and the missing year.

All This Land

And please, if you enjoy this fic, leave her some love, ‘cause she really should be encouraged to write more, whenever she gets the chance. :)
