Why this must be read:

This is a delicious gen tale in the ‘Sentinels and Guides are known and stolen away for training’ genre.

Jim and Blair have escaped their captors and are on the run. Like a scene from a good movie, the overall feel of fear, anxiety and pursuit are intermixed with quiet moments in which the fugitives reflect on their hopeless situation.

He wanted to look into the eyes of his only friend as the end came and say something that would echo through both their souls. He wanted to be like those people in the movies they had secretly watched, the ones they weren't allowed to see because it might give them 'ideas' about things they weren't supposed to want. He wanted to be like the guy in the end who always said that one great line, that one truth that hit you straight in your gut and made you lie awake for days, mulling it over in your head. He wanted to be the guy that said that incredible line just before leaping over the wall and charging straight into the fire, knowing he wouldn't see another day.

Instead, he huddled within himself, and felt a deep well of despair rise up within him. He knew he wasn't that guy. He could never be that guy. He lacked the one vital element that those guys in the movies all had. Those heroes in the movies had accepted their imminent death. They'd accepted it with a peace too deep to comprehend. A peace he had never known. He wasn't like those guys. He couldn't be. He didn't want to be like them.

He didn't want to be dead.

"I want to be free"

Suddenly there was a warm weight by his side as strong arms fell around him and cradled him as close as his own mother had never been allowed to do.

"I know Chief. I know. I'm so sorry."’
