tartanshell's fic at ff.net, at Skyehawke, and at The Dark Arts.
Why this must be read: This story takes place the night after Luke's home is destroyed, before he and Obi-Wan travel to Mos Eisley for their date with destiny. Luke has a stronger connection to the Force--and the past--than he thinks he does.
Luke doesn't remember doing it, but at some point he must have sat in front of the fire--did his legs give out?--and he has been staring at it for some time, apparently, because his eyes are dry, and his noses is full of smoke. His face is hot, and his behind and thighs are warm from the floor, but his back and neck are cold and prickling. Like his heart, his body doesn't know what to feel.
Ben sits on a chair beside him, and he has shed his brown cloak. The firelight turns his cream-colored robe gold, like sunrise on sand.
Luke looks up and finds Ben watching him with that strange, level look of his, like he's measuring Luke, holding back judgment. It's not unkind, but Luke has the idea that kindness doesn't really matter. After all, you don't ask the giant boulders out in the wastes if they like you.
Maybe, Luke thinks, maybe that's just how Jedi Knights are. Quiet and aloof and a little bit frightening and, well, bigger than everyone else. And if that's what being a Jedi means...
"I can't do this," Luke murmurs, scrubbing the sleeve of his tunic over his eyes. When he looks at Ben, for a moment, all he can see is orange.
Ben shifts on his chair, and it's so quiet that Luke can hear his joints crack. He raises his eyebrows slightly. "What can you not do, Luke?"
With a sigh, Luke sets down his drink--this second one is now half empty, too--and pulls his knees up to his chest. "Be a Jedi. I don't think I have the Force."
Ben chuckles softly into his own cup. "The Force is not something you have, Luke. It is not something any of us can possess," he says. He makes a gesture that includes both of them, the room, maybe everything.
"The Force is something some of us can feel, but even those who cannot feel it are a part of it. It surrounds us, binds us, flows through us. The Force is strong in some of us--stronger in some than in others, certainly--but no one 'has' the Force. If anything," Ben adds with a slight smile, "you might say it has us. You see?"
