Why this must be read: I’m a sucker for stories where the angst is thick but everything isn’t totally bleak and hopeless. This lovely, angsty, slash story is a perfect example of the type.
It’s also got the characteristic push-and-pull of Jim and Blair’s relationship; except here, they’re angry and lashing out and they don’t spare each other.
Neither has a clue how to deal with the appalling consequences of Blair’s dissertation becoming public and to complicate matters, Jim’s father wades in with his usual talent for making people feel good about themselves.
Although it’s painful to read in places, there’s a thread of hope that pulls the reader along through the slough of angst, as Jim consciously holds to the one certainty in his life.
Startled, Blair yanked his hand away. "Sorry, man. I wasn't thinking."
"No kidding." Jim frowned in anger. "You haven't been doing much of that lately, have you?"
"What the hell's that supposed to mean?" Blair looked over at Megan, working at her desk, and lowered his voice. "I barely touched you, nobody noticed. Jesus, take a pill." Now Blair was frowning, too, his forehead creased in annoyance.
"Just back off, Sandburg. Go find something else to do, and someone else to do it with."
"Fine, whatever, man." Blair paused. "I wasn't trying to out you, you know."
The sarcasm in Blair's voice grated harshly in his ears, and Jim didn't bother trying to rein in his temper. "Yeah well, you've already done it once this week, isn't that enough for you?"
Blair paled. "You asshole." He stood there, staring down at Jim with hurt, angry eyes. Jim looked away.
If you wondered how Jim and Blair could carry on living together during the hurt and harsh words of the whole diss mess, this story not only explains it; it takes that mess and makes something good out of it.
(NB: for some reason the story is rated G but R is probably closer to the mark.)
