Set during the final episode of the series,

sparrowette manages to perfectly capture two of the most complex characters in the company after one of the most harrowing experiences the war has forced them to come face to face with. I love how Winters is everything we've come to know him as - commander, father, calm authority figure - but he's also just Dick here, a man doing what he can to save what's left of his soldiers.

When Joe pulls him in closer, bites him, claws at him, sobs into his open mouth—these too are a punishment. Break the rules, or they’ll break you, it says. Hot voice ghosting across his tongue, over his jaw, his neck. Break the rules or they’ll break you, break the rules or they’ll break you, break the rules or….

He moans, shifts onto his knees with one hand against the wall and the other fisted in Joe’s hair. Their eyes are closed, dark lids painted with old faces. There’s no sound inside the room besides their breathing, their words. Joe curses and Dick blesses. Joe punishes and Dick repents, lays the sins of carelessness at Joe’s feet so that he can pay for them with blood and saliva.
