Why this must be read: Jim is a man of few words whom we know through his actions rather than what he says. Voluble he’s not. All of which makes Jim’s pov irresistible to me.
Most Jim pov fics have him unable to express his emotions yet still able to reflect on them. But in this fic, Jim is as taciturn to himself as he is to the outside world. This is soldier!Jim fic and it’s done as well as any I’ve ever seen.
arrow00 has written the silent Jim I always wanted to read. He's quite glorious: as taciturn to himself as he is to the outside world, not considering his own feelings so much as reacting to them. You can really believe that this repressed man has been in covert ops, seeing and doing some very questionable things.
The story also beautifully illustrates the perfect balance of the Jim/Blair relationship: Blair’s pushing forces Jim to reveal more than Jim is comfortable with, yet opening up to Blair usually brings him a sense of rightness and relief. And of course, being Jim, he can’t help respecting and loving Blair.
Jim felt his face stiffen. Quotes from his ops training echoed in his head. "It's not about quitting. It's about...acceptable damages. It's about taking power in a situation where you're powerless."
"Jesus, Jim."
Poor Sandburg. He was staring at Jim with this panicked look. Under it was a heavy disappointment, as if Jim had really let him down this time.
Jim hated that look.
How to explain to the kid the way things were? Because in spite of Sandburg's travels all over the world, in spite of the nightmare situations he'd gotten into in their own back yard, he still retained this indomitable innocence. It was beautiful, really. Sandburg was beautiful, inside and out, and Jim didn't want him to lose that.
Acceptable Damages
So far there are two more stories that follow on from this, Sense Memory and Scavengers. Both are brilliant. In fact, everything I’ve read by her is.

Thank you for such a lovely recommendation. I do have a sweet spot for taciturn!Jim, and Blair with his open enthusiasm is such a terrific foil in the show. I so love them both for it.

The relationship you depict between him and Blair is a perfect balance and I love this whole series of stories so much.
