Why this must be read: This is an older fic, but one by two authors who haven't been represented here before, and both these authors have written a number of Smallville stories that are worth checking into. In the early days of Smallville, it was easy to see that Martha had a soft spot for Lex. Now, in this future fic, Martha Kent, tired of seeing her "boys" at odds, suggests a way they might be able to work out some of their issues ... without property damage. They try that old-fashioned approach of writing letters, and as a letter-writer myself I really like the epistolary nature of the story. It shows (with many cross-outs) how difficult it sometimes is to say the right thing, and how words are easily taken the wrong way. It's a fun piece with slow progress towards that happy ending, and even better news, there's a recently posted sequel!

Dear Lex,

Look, just because you've got my Mom fooled into thinking you're this poor little lost boy, don't think you can pull that with me!

Do you know how many times I end up thinking that if I could just sit down and tell you about my day, no matter how awful it was, that everything would be OK? I can't dump a lot of these things on Mom, it would be too much for her. I can understand the listening thing - Mom has a way of just being there for you, doesn't she? She always seems to know when to say something and when to keep quiet. Sometimes, I wish you had the same talent, instead of deliberately needling me into saying the dumbest things imaginable It's a gift I don't have, but often wish I could emulate.

LECTURES YOU GET FROM ME? ARE YOU NUTS? There are just some things that LexCorp really should not be doing, and you have to admit that, Lex. I WOULD NOT HAVE TO LECTURE YOU, YOU INSENSITIVE IDIOT IF YOU EVER LISTENED TO ME IN THE FIRST PLACE! KRYPTONITE POWERED ROBOTS? YOUR CHIEF RESEARCHER TURNED INTO A SENTIENT VEGETABLE? Though I am the first to say that I am not perfect, by any means. WHAT WAS THAT ALL ABOUT? ARE YOU NUTS? I realize that I Superman frequently is on less than good terms with you, but you have to admit that you have done some of the most amazingly stupid evil crap some things that are illegal, immoral, shady, and just plain wrong less than ethical. It would be hard for Superman not to shake you until you get some sense in your thick head notice things like that.
