Clark Kent's Adventures in Babysitting by paperbkryter
My name is Toby and I'll be the Smallville driver for November. I adore Chlark fics and I think that most of my recs will end up in that genre. However, I have certain Clex fics I adore and want to rec and some gen stuff as well, so it, hopefully, will end up being quite a mix. This first fic, however, is actually about Clark and Lana
Here's the rundown:
Fandom: SMALLVILLE
Pairing: Clark Kent/Lana Lang
Author on LJ: I'm not sure if she's still on lj, honestly.
Author Website: http://www.teresakay.us/
And also a ff.net account: http://www.fanfiction.net/u/169034/paperbkryter
Why this must be read: It's a surprise of a story that starts out hilarious with Clark babysitting for the little sister he would have had if things had gone better in Exodus. Katie's adorable and all the trouble she gets into will have you rolling with laughter, but it's the story's change in tone to serious and regretful that really grabs and stays with you. I think in the series canon's "heyday" of Clark/Lana this is a compelling look at the limits of that relationship and why, perhaps, Clark is destined to be alone.
Here's an excerpt:
"You know," Lana said after a little while. "It would have never worked out between us anyway, Clark."
He paused in mid bite. "Why not?"
She smiled over at Katie who had ceased with the pepperoni sticking and was getting down to the business of eating.
"I want children."
"So do I."
Lana laughed. "You can't even handle your little sister!"
"Hey, that's different."
"Yeah, and 'different' is the problem. No matter how much you look like one of us, Clark, you aren't."
