Why this must be read:
Because I don't want to get stale (it's the leading cause of death) today I'm reccing a short Ray/Ray story for a change. And I think I've picked a doozey.
slidellra is a pretty well-known author in this fandom, and given the fact that this story was written for
ds_flashfiction's recent Five Challenge most of you probably read it, but I think it's worth a second pass. Her take on Kowalski and Vecchio's relationship knocks me flat, and she perfectly nails Kowalski's bristly vulnerability and Vecchio's world-weary amusement at the curveballs life keeps throwing him. I told S in the comments that reading her stories is always like watching a magician at work ("Presto! Perfect characterization! Abracadabra! Terrific RayV voice!"). Check out this short, heart-twisty fic, and make sure you tell
slidellra you liked it!
It wasn't like Vecchio had never seen a pretty guy before; he'd seen plenty, and plenty prettier than Kowalski. He'd seen tough guys and queer guys and guys who could dance and guys who thought they could box. Kowalski wasn't the only grown man to duck his head like a kid whenever anybody said something halfway nice to him, and he sure as hell wasn't the only one faster with his fists than his brains.
Guys with pretty mouths and ways of sitting with their thighs all spread, one hand tapping a knee, like a billboard saying look at what I got? Seen them, too.
But something about the whole Kowalski package knocked him to the side, knocked the breath right out of him and the feeling back into him. He'd had enough knocks, though, and so had Kowalski. So thanks, but no thanks.
