Why this must be read:

This is about the rape of a main character, and it's disturbing and intense, and many folks might avoid it because of the topic. There really isn't any right or wrong way to do justice to the issue in a rape fic, but usually authors resort to cliches, and trite outcomes, and don't seem to understand how complex the aftermath of a rape is for the victim and friends/family. Especially when the victim is male, and a cop. This is the only rape fic I've come across that in my opinion gets it right. Not so much in the specifics of how these particular characters handle the trauma, but in the way their thoughts, feelings, and responses are shown.

The author made the unusual but brilliant choice to write [I originally typo'd "right" which is also true] in second person, present tense. I think she did it instinctively, maybe without thinking, hmm, this story needs to be written this way, but she made absolutely the right choice, and I think it's the one single most important reason why the story works so perfectly. The second person is so typical, so normal, when a victim relates a trauma, and that's what makes this sound so real.

It's dark, yes, and emotional, yes, but it's absolutely brilliant, and in my opinion, this consistently excellent writer's best work.

Here’s what you know.

You know that most days are good days. On a good day you can see for miles, and the view is 360 degrees of terrific. You’ve got a fast car, and a great partner, and all the pretty girls are smiling at you.

Once in a while, though, a day just goes bad. On a bad day, there’s nothing to see ahead or behind. The sun might as well have stayed in bed, for all the good it does you.

Today is a bad day.

Your wrists are locked in your own cuffs and looped over a pipe in the ceiling. That’s your biggest problem – it’s the reason why you can’t just kick and punch and fight your way out of this mess. But the little things are just as bad in their own way. Your back is killing you. Not literally. Not yet. But it really hurts. And there’s blood running down the inside of your left arm. It's annoying as hell.">

Whoops - I really meant to comment on this sooner, but -DAMN- you picked a winner here.

I'm a huge Rebelcat fan anyway, but this is just s-o-o-o-o good. Gritty and real, skillfully executed - RC's true talent just shines... this work screams quality.

And, quite simply, this story just knocks you on your ass with the power of its credibility.
