Grey's Anatomy, Overview
Grey's Anatomy is the hit ABC show currently in its fourth season.

Grey's Anatomy is about the life of Dr. Meredith Grey, a surgical intern at Seattle Grace Hospital. The show features an ensemble cast, though Meredith is the central character, providing voice-over narration at the beginning and end of most episodes. Greys is in its third season and there are talks of a spin off centering on Addison Montgomery.
The first episode of the show is about Meredith starting her internship at SGH. She meets the other interns, her resident and her one night stand from the night before - Derek Shepard, who is an attending at SGH. Thus resulting in a complication on her very first day. The show then goes on to follows Meredith and the other interns as they live their lives and find their lives intertwining. Meredith and Cristina become best friends, George and Izzie move into Meredith's house and Alex's becomes almost the annoying brother.
But of course, anyone whose even seen only one episode of Greys can agree with the fact the show can greatly be described in one word: Issues. Issues between characters and patients and in general. The show is complicated and really to best understand it you need to watch it, seriously, you just need to watch it.
Interns

Dr. Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo).
Grey's Anatomy is all about Meredith Grey, the show follows her life and then, from that, her friends. She is the main character, and the narrator.
Meredith's mother was a famous surgeon who now has Alzheimer's and her father left when Meredith was quite young and she never saw him again until her internship. Because of her lack of family stability she consider the other interns her family even calling Cristina her sister. We don't know a lot about her teenage years accept for the fact she once said, "I wore a lot of black. Had the whole angry pink hair thing going on. Wouldn't have been caught dead at a prom."
When we first meet Meredith she is a heavy drinker and into having one night stands instead of relationships - As the series continues she seems to always go back to this whenever she is in trouble or having a crisis.
She was in a stable relationship with Derek aka McDreamy, which then turned out to be not after she suffered a death experience. They now fool around with no 'strings' attached.

Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh).
Cristina is incredibly focused and driven (even more so than the others) and is always excited about the chance to scrub in on a surgery. Extremely competitive, she is not above stealing and hijacking patients if it means getting in on an exciting surgery.
Cristina has excellent surgical skills, and is the intern with the most medical knowledge. However, she has difficulties conveying her feelings and dislikes being touched by anyone, including her mother. She also has a poor bedside manner, and finds it hard to empathize with most patients. (Quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Cristin a_Yang)
However that her cold manner doesn't mean she doesn't care, she let George stay with her and Burke when Meredith broke him, she cares deeply for Burke, she loves Meredith and she even went along with saying, "I cut the LVAD wire," for Izzie's sake. Cristina also began pregnant early into Burke's and her's relationship, as soon as she found out she sheduled an abortion but before she carried through with it she was in a surgery and her left fallopian tube burst and she lost the baby.
She was engaged to Burke but he left her, and the show, at the atlar.

Dr. Isobel "Izzie" Stevens (Katherine Heigl).
Izzie is kind and compassionate, often to the extent of getting too emotionally involved, and frequently goes out of her way to help her patients, disregarding rules and protocol if she needs to. (Quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Isobel_%2 2Izzie%22_Stevens).
Izzie is the rags to riches story on the show. She grew up in a trailer park and then modeled to pay her way through medical school, she has said, when mocked about it, "at least I have no dept." She had a daughter when she was sixteen and had it adopted, she doesn't know where her daughter now is.
Izzie has three main relationships: Alex, who is her on again - off again boyfriend, George, who is her best friend (turned lover/boyfriend/?) and Denny, the man she nearly lost everything for. She quit the internship after she cut Denny's LVAD wire, which did cause him to get a new heart but hours later he suffered a blood clot and died. She is back in the program.
Izzie in the middle of season three started a relationship with a married George, this was carried onto season four and George has claimed he'll leave Callie for her.

Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers).
Alex's is almost the 'bad boy' of Greys. He's rude and tactless and often honest when many people think he shouldn't be but he does have a code of conduct, even if not everyone agrees with it.
Alex was the first intern to decide on his specialty – plastic surgery. While it seemed at first that he chose that specialty due to "frat-boy" superficiality, the real reason was because plastic surgery patients “sign up for the pain they get”. It is this soft side to himself that Alex actively plays down, adopting a brash and cocky attitude to project to other people. Izzie, Meredith and subsequently Addison are able to see through this façade, and recognize him to be the loyal and honest person that he is. However, he has unwittingly been drawn to obstetrics and gynecology after having several bad experiences in plastics. Alex seems to have some talent in OB/GYN after serving as Addison’s intern for a while. (Quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Alex_Karev).
What we know of Alex's childhood is that his father was a drunk and use to beat his mother, he use to dream of being a wrester so he could stop his father. He tends to connect well with abused kids and patients.
Alex's has an on again - off again relationship with Izzie and had a brief, brief fling with Addison which ended with Addison leaving and Alex's falling in love with Ava, a patient.

Dr. George O'Malley (T. R. Knight).
George is consider my the other interns the 'baby,' though he has done, successfully, several complicated surgeries.
He is one of Meredith's roommates and has had an infatuation with Meredith from his first meeting with her, and ended up having a one-night stand with her, she cried while they were having sex leading to their friendship being ruined for several episodes, it picked up again, though, when a patient told him Izzie missed him - so he moved back in, and because he found a new girlfriend, an later wife, in Callie.
While George seems to have a very close knit family he doesn't always connect with them, being quite different in some apects. In the third season he had to deal with the discussing to turn his father life support off, which leans to him marrying Callie. However he then has an affair with Izzie and resolves to leave Callie for her. He also failed his exams and has decided to do his internship all over again.
Residents

Dr. Miranda Bailey a.k.a. "The Nazi" (Chandra Wilson).
Dr. Bailey has mean nicknamed "The Nazi" because of her tough personality and blunt attitude. Although often harsh with her interns, she cares about her patients and is a committed surgeon.
She has been married for ten years and in that time trying to become pregnant which she did achieve in season two. Because of the fact she now understands what it's like to be a parent some cases are harder for her than others.
In season three she was disillusioned by how little she can help patients as a surgeon so she decided to open a free clinic at Seattle Grace. She faced initial difficulties getting support from the attendings, but after talking with the Chief, managed to get their agreement to work there. The Denny Duquette Memorial Clinic has since opened using the $8.7 million bequeathed to Izzie by Denny, and Bailey is satisfied that the clinic will change people's lives for the better. (quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Miranda _Bailey).
Bailey also completed for Chief. Resident losing to Callie - only to have the Chief fired Callie a few episodes later and hired Bailey.

Dr. Callie Torres (Sara Ramírez).
Callie was a character introduced in season two as George's love interest - he's her McDreamy.
She is an orthopedic and not much is known about her childhood besides the fact she described herself as "that girl in the back of the class who eats her hair," and she was living in the Hospital basement when we first meet her. In season three we find out Callie's rich.
Callie is often fighting with Izzy over George and, after George and her had gotten married, she told Izzy that George would pick her side if it came down to it and just to back off. She wants to get pregnant and has just recently found out about George and Izzie's affair.
She was Chief. Resident but was fired from the job.
Attendings

Dr. Richard Webber, Chief of Surgery (James Pickens, Jr).
The current Chief of Surgery at Seattle Grace. During his residency at Seattle Grace, he had an affair with Meredith's mother, Ellis Grey, although both were married. Although Ellis left her husband, Richard could not bring himself to leave his wife, Adele (he would learn decades later, however, that Adele had known about the affair all along and stayed with him anyway). He is a recovered alcoholic.
Adele asked him to retire, forcing him to choose between his career or their marriage. He tried to skirt around it, but Adele, tired of waiting, made her choice and left him. He moved out and was sleeping in his office for a short time, but now has a room at the same hotel as Callie. He attempts to patch things with his wife, but is stunned to find out that she has moved on, forcing him and his wife to get a divorce.
Since learning of Ellis's illness, Richard had been visiting her regularly, but upon deciding to attempt a reconciliation with Adele realized that he could no longer continue his emotional affair with Ellis. Richard had planned to retire and recommend Preston Burke as his successor, but after the secret of Burke's tremor and cover-up came out, that plan was put to a stand-still. Nevertheless, he has told the hospital board of his retirement and has yet to name his successor; Derek, Preston, Addison and Mark all eagerly clamouring for the post. (Quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Richard _Webber). However at the end of season three he gave the job to Derek only to be told by Derek that he thought he should try again, do a better job this time round.

Dr. Derek Shepherd a.k.a. "McDreamy" (Patrick Dempsey).
Professionally, Derek is regarded as a very successful surgeon; his services result in two million dollars’ worth of annual revenue for the hospital, and Derek has performed numerous complicated, risky procedures, including a stand-still operation, double-barrel brain bypasses, and separation surgery for adult conjoined twins. His confidence was shaken slightly when his surgery to repair a gunshot injury on a colleague, Preston Burke, resulted in Burke’s hand developing a tremor, but Derek remains a competent and skilled surgeon who has not forgotten the importance of compassion and bedside manner when dealing with patients.
Family is very important to Derek. His decision to work on his marriage was based largely on his sense of obligation to Addison as his family, the woman with whom he shared “eleven birthdays, eleven Thanksgivings, [and] eleven Christmases).” Though they have now divorced.
Derek was in a relationship with Meredith but after she let herself drown and died (to be brought back later) he couldn't handle their relationship anymore and Meredith ended it in the season finale. They now seem to be having a sex only relationship.

Dr. Preston Xavier Burke (Isaiah Washington).
Dr. Burke is the chief cardiothoracic surgeon at Seattle Grace. Burke graduated first in his class from Johns Hopkins Medical School, not because he was necessarily the most talented nor the smartest, but because he worked the hardest. He was once the interim chief of surgery while Dr. Webber was healing from his own brain surgery. He plays the trumpet and enjoys jazz music.
He began a relationship with intern Cristina in early season one but broke it off because he feared it would ruin both of their reputations. Her miscarriage brought them back together. He and Cristina now live together in his perfectly-kept apartment.
In he second season finale he was shot and thus affecting his control of his right-hand. His temporary fix to this possibly long-term problem was to work together with Cristina during every one of his surgeries so that she could take over in case he might have trouble with his hand. The arrangement fell apart after Cristina, reacting to growing stress after George caught onto their secret, went to the Chief and confessed everything. Initially, he was engaged in a cold war with Cristina, but he has since proposed to her and she has accepted his proposal. Until their secret was revealed, Burke was set to become the next Chief of Surgery, but now he has to compete with his fellow attendings for the position. He has since recovered, after being operated on by Derek.
Later in the season Cristina and he get engaged but he leaves her at the atlar and he leaves the show.

Dr. Addison Forbes Montgomery (Kate Walsh).
Addison is a highly regarded neonatal surgeon, Addison is also a board certified OB-GYN with fellowships in maternal-fetal medicine and medical genetics, she did two years of study on cystic fibrosis. She has been called "McHot" by the male interns, and has been compared to Isabella Rossellini by Meredith. She was married to Derek for eleven years before having an affair with his best friend, plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Sloan, which prompted Derek to leave New York for Seattle. In spite of her chosen speciality and Derek's large family, Addison admits to Miranda Bailey that when she and Derek discussed having children, she realized she wasn't ready. After she and Derek initially separated, Addison remained in New York and lived with Mark for two months, during which she became pregnant and aborted Mark's baby. The relationship ended when Mark cheated on Addison and Dr. Webber brought her to Seattle Grace for a consult on a difficult case (and, presumably, to break things up between Derek and Meredith).
She decided to stay on as head of neonatal surgery at Seattle Grace, signing a lucrative 2 year contract, and she and Derek decided to work things out. After finding out about Derek's affair with Meredith, in a drunken haze, Addison called Mark Sloan to Seattle. Derek and Addison agreed that their marriage was over and started divorce proceedings. She asked Mark Sloan to go back to New York, but he stayed, expressing his desire to continue their relationship. Addison continues to rebuff him. When the divorce was finalized Addison dropped the "Shepherd" from her last name.
She has (along with Mark Sloan) decided to abstain from sex for 60 days. If Dr Sloan completes the challenge, she is willing to try a real relationship with him. However Addison loses when she sleeps with Alex Karev.
She has expressed immense interest in being the next Chief of Surgery. Addison is one of only a handful of surgeons in the world who know how to separate fetal blood vessels. (Quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Addison _Forbes_Montgomery).
She was not made Chief of Surgery and instead moved to LA to a new show.

Dr. Mark Sloan a.k.a. "McSteamy" (Eric Dane).
A top-tier plastic surgeon, he grew up with the Shepherd family and used to be Derek's best friend until Derek caught him in bed with his wife Addison. Addison also revealed (by telling Derek, that after Derek left for Seattle, she and Mark continued their relationship until she caught Sloan cheating on her. Their relationship was not only complicated by his infidelity, but by the abortion of Addison's pregnancy with his child.
The interns have given him the nickname "McSteamy" (to complement Derek's "McDreamy") for his rugged good looks. He flew out for sex at Addison's request ("I Am a Tree") and has since been hired at the hospital. Mark has described himself as "self-destructive and self-loathing to an almost pathological degree", and apparently has a history of womanizing that not only includes Addison and his former tennis partner's wife, but Callie Torres and Derek's sister Nancy, who told her brother that "everyone sleeps with Mark. It's practically a rite of passage."
He was set to leave Seattle Grace after failing to adapt well, but decides to stay after learning from Meredith that the Chief would be stepping down. (Quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_cha racters_from_Grey%27s_Anatomy#Attendings) .

Note: The country I live in hasn't aired any of the fourth season yet so I know details but well, I don't know much so the fourth season been pretty much left off, sorry.
(Beware, Greys is a lot about relationships, relationships are the shows crack so plot points and spoilers below)
(I'm only discussing main relationhips, so Izzie and Cristina's friendship is not mentioned, if you need to know: They're friends, they've had some problems but they care about each other)

Meredith and Derek
They are the ‘it’ couple on the show. Their relationship started by them having a one night stand then they found out they worked together and slowly built an actual relationship that did soon fall apart when Derek’s wife came to Seattle. Derek had to choose between Meredith and Addison and chose Addison, breaking Meredith’s heart. They later get together again but late season three they begin having problems and now they are in a sex only relationship.

Meredith and Ellis Grey
Meredith and her mother have never had the best relationship but it’s shown in their final moments together that they loved each other a lot.

Meredith and George
