Why this must be read: If you know nothing about Brimstone don't dismiss this out of hand, since my entire knowledge of the series comes from this story. (Okay, I also know that John Glover who plays Lionel Luthor in Smallville played the part of the Devil - he may be having a problem with typecasting!)

As already mentioned, you don't need to know Brimstone to be able to read this story, since what the main character, Ezekiel Stone, does is quickly explained in the opening section, in a very skilful bit of exposition. Not surprisingly, Duncan MacLeod is protecting someone that he believes innocent, and the author manages the difficult task of involving us as judges of the crime. Although quite a harrowing piece, the tone varies between humour and darkness, sometimes in the same sentence.

The Devil walked to the bedside table and picked up a dog-eared textbook. "She's got a thing for history, this one," he commented idly. Lips quirked into a tilted grin. "Do you know that after she left her baby in a dumpster that she went home and read 'Nicholas and Alexandra'? It was her Russian phase," he added absently as he held up the text.

This was written for a Lyric Wheel, and one of the general rules for most wheels is that you include a line from the song you've been given for inspiration. This can be quite tricky since lyrics don't necessarily lend themselves to narrative. In this case the line is woven into the ending in a way that seems quite natural, but also gives a stab of pain to the reader.

Read it for the painful look at guilt and innocence.
