About face, by Shimere (M/M implied only)

Why this must be read: This is a canon angsty fic. No last-minute change of mind - Thomas is going to die and this story tells you why, and who were the men who conspired, more or less consciously, to kill him - or sent him to his death. The motivations are clearly exposed, the characters are true to themselves, Thomas Dougthie's presence pervades the whole fic - and he's not even here. The situation is seen from four different POV.

Bright liked Drake from the beginning. He was a real man – not afraid of hard work, one who backed down for no one. He wasn’t afraid of chances, especially when they led to the chance for profit. Bright did his best to impress the captain with his usefulness. By this time, he had learned many things about sailing that went far beyond his skills as a carpenter. His cleverness and ability in a rough situation – and his occasional ruthlessness when dealing with enemies - led to his advancement. During this time, the raids on the Spanish Main, Drake impressed Bright more and more. He was larger than life. He exemplified all the virtues that Bright wanted to emulate. Ned Bright wanted to bask in Drake’s reflected glory forever.
Drake came to depend on him for everything. It really didn’t come as a surprise when Drake invited Ned into his cabin one night, and, after plying him with a prodigious amount of rum, made a seaman’s use of him. Such things were common. Drake had a wife, but she was far away – and what else was a proper man, a virile man, to do? It meant nothing to Ned, except that it was one more service that he could perform for his captain. Drake needn’t have bothered about the rum, really.
