Why this must be read:
This is another 'set in 2006' fic. Set post episode 1.08, it contains spoilers for the first series only. Sam has woken up after several months in a coma, but can no longer remember his experiences in 1973. But vivid dreams have a habit of bleeding through to the consciousness, can Sam work out what they mean?
This is a beautiful fic, long and satisfying. It does what a lot of the fandom had hoped would happen – gives Sam and Gene a happy ever after.
Every night, he had the same dream. He found himself in a dark alleyway, the narrow street black, shiny and wet. He could smell the recent rain, feel the cool metal of the gun in his hand, hear the echo of the fat drops plopping onto the roofs of the old cars parked along the brick wall. He'd crouch down and hide behind one of the cars, an old rust-colored Ford Cortina, and listen to the sound of two men arguing. He could never make out what they were saying. The rest of the dream was nothing more than flashes. A camel coat. The spark of a gunshot. The starry sky. The clicking heels of someone running out of the alley. And the only word he ever remembered hearing: "Sam!" That's when he'd wake up, the unknown man's voice still ringing in his ears.
