Waiting For Ducky by Periwinkle (PG)

Hi, I'm Nikki, and I shall be your drive for NCIS this month.

As a hard and fast OTP girl, in the now 'old fashioned' sense of the term, the vast majority of the stories I recommend will centre around my OTP: Gibbs/Ducky. However, I do also ship Abby/McGee, and hope to include a couple of those as well, and I might even have a gen story or two. There will not, however, be any other pairings.

The stories I recommend will all be favourite stories of mine, because for me a story worthy or recommending is a story that I personally thoroughly enjoy.

Anyway, enough burble. Onto the first of this month's recommended stories.

Fandom: NCIS
Pairing: Leroy Jethro Gibbs/Donald 'Ducky' Mallard
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] periwinkle27
Author Website: Periwinkle's Fanfiction

Why this must be read:

So many writers and readers, not only in NCIS fandom but in others know [livejournal.com profile] periwinkle27 as a beta reader, a first class beta reader. They forget, indeed some may not even realise, what she is also a fine writer.

Waiting For Ducky is one of many stories spawned by the end of Season 3 double episode 'Hiatus', and in my opinion is one of the best. The premise is incredibly simple: Gibbs cannot decide whether to return home, so he turns to the one person who can help him, is old friend and lover - Ducky.

It is sweet, but not saccharine and in a lovely example of the intense closeness the these two men share. It's touching and moving, but as it's written by Periwinkle, it also has a smidgeon of humour in it, as we have a wonderful scene with Gibbs pacing around a hotel room waiting for Ducky to appear and worrying. Only Periwinkle can achieve worry and humour in the same scene in such an excellent way. And once Ducky has arrived the ensuing scene just keeps getting better and better with tenderness and love, and it's all very in character and easy to see unfold.

Later that evening, when he knew that Mrs. Mallard would probably be sleeping, he picked up the phone and dialled a number he had called hundreds of times before.  Ducky answered on the third ring.

“Duck?”

“Jethro? What’s wrong, dearest?”

Gibbs smiled inwardly.  After all these years Ducky could read any intonation of his voice perfectly, even if Gibbs only said a single word.  There was something wonderful about having a friend that was basically an extension of yourself.  Gibbs could feel the restlessness drain out of his body and a sense of peace take over.  Ducky always had a calming effect on him.

“Nothing’s wrong, Duck. I just miss everyone. Especially you.”

OOOHHHHH! I'm excited! I don't tend to read a lot of NCIS fanfic, but when I do, it's because I too adore Ducky and Gibbs! I'm thrilled that you'll be driving this month!!!

Very nice.
And I almost like 'hair kisses' as much as 'ear kisses'
