Overview: RPF (Science Fiction TV)
Disclaimer: This fandom overview is just intended to help you match faces to actor's names, and get an idea of what you might look for while reading. It is not intended to be offensive in any way, and please don't ask me for citations. I probably don't have any.
BATLLESTAR GALACTICA 2003

clockwise from left: Michael Hogan, Mary McDonnell, Edward James Olmos (aka Eddie), Jamie Bamber, Tahmoh Penikett, Grace Park, Tricia Helfer, Katee Sackhoff, James Callis.

Callum Keith Rennie
Starring:
Jamie, the Brit. Soft-spoken smarty-pants, who lists a copy of Dante's Divine Comedy (in Italian, I'm guessing) as one of the things he would bring with him to a deserted island.
Katee, the American. Shy, girly, 27 year-old fan favourite, the youngest of the regular cast.
Callum, the Canadian. Smoker, poet, painter, recovering alcoholic and prince of the Canadian indie scene.
With special appearances by:
Tahmoh, the Northerner. His first name is a Yukon First Nations word, but for whatever personal or cultural reasons he doesn't tell people what it means. I don't know, that's my favourite bit of Tahmoh trivia.
Tricia, the farmgirl, five-foot-ten ex-model, one of Katee's best friends.
Canon fodder: According to Katee? lots of inappropriate touching on-set, and running jokes about sexual harrassment. And the fact that Callum has been in everything with every other Canadian ever, ocassionally leads to crossovers.

FIREFLY/SERENITY

From left to right: Summer Glau, Ron Glass, Gina Torres, Adam Baldwin, Jewel Staite, Nathan Fillion, Alan Tudyk, Sean Maher, Morena Baccarin
Starring:
Sean, the shy one, the theatre student, who we're all pretty certain is actually gay (see above disclaimer).
Nathan, the not-shy one, the attention-loving wise-ass ex-soap star
Summer, the Texan ballerina and the youngest of the group
Alan, the enigma. Completely on purpose, I think.
Canon fodder: mostly that clip of Nathan kissing Sean at the Serenity premiere, which I can't seem to locate at the moment
Communities:
realfireflyfic
STARGATE: ATLANTIS

From left to right: Rachel Luttrell, Jason Momoa, David Hewlett, Paul McGillion, Torri Higginson, Joe Flanigan
Starring:
Joe, shy, cerebral Californian trust-fund baby. Expect frequent references to the New York Times crossword, outdoor sports, and Joe's skateboard.
David, boisterous, wisecracking geek-nerd. Knows all about the Internet, and what we're saying about him on it. *waves at David*
Torri, flirty London-trained LA-based Canadian, into Shakespeare, her dog, and jokes about heavy drinking.
With special appearances by:
Rachel, dancer, given to (femslash alert) going to yoga classes and drinking chai lattes with Torri and David's fiance Jane Loughman.
Jason, the youngest, the ex-Baywatch hottie, currently most famous for knocking up one TV actress while engaged to a different TV actress. Did I mention he's the youngest?
Canon fodder: The on-screen tension and large lack of anything in common in real life, plus Torri's departure from the show. Expect lots of angst and longing sighs.
Communities:

STARGATE: SG-1
Clockwise from left: Michael Shanks, Amanda Tapping, Christopher Judge, Ben Browder, and Claudia Black

Richard Dean Anderson (aka Rick)
Starring:
Michael, the high-maintenance, attention-whoring, fan-favourite. No, I love Michael. I'm just saying.
Amanda, the Toronto-raised girl-next-door, patient in her role as the only girl on the playground.
Chris, the loud, high-energy force-of-nature, who Amanda has called too exhausting to be around for too long.
Rick, the semi-retired charming television veteran, kind of notorious for being a bit of a serial dater.
Ben, the hard-working, business-oriented Southerner, always the first to work.
Claudia, the cheeky Australian mother of two
With special appearances by:
Lexa Doig, snarky actress, Michael's RL wife and mother of two out of three of his kids, whose relationship with Michael seems to mostly consist of them teasing each other mercilessly. It's really sweet to watch, actually.
Canon fodder: The show ran for ten years plus two movies - that's a lot of long hours worked together. Chris and Michael are best friends. Just take a minute to imagine the hurricane that generates. :) Ben and Claudia almost constitue their own microfandom, a holdover from their days co-starring on Farscape.
bcshow (Ben/Claudia only) and
sg_gossip (all Gateverse).
Multifandom:
ckr_actorfic for Callum Keith Rennie
prettylightsfic, a multifandom winter challenge
dw_rpf and
tw_rpf for Doctor Who and Torchwood, respectively. I won't be reccing them, but someone else might!
I hope that helps. :)

And oh lord, Katee's stories of the sexual harassment seminars and inappropriate touching are SO SO FUNNY (the whole Callum story = win)
I JUST REALISED YOU WROTE THE POST.
*waves*
Is there actually SGA rpf femslash out there? I only know of the one Torri/Rachel story, but I don't really actively search it out.

HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS?
Great post, by the way. I'm very excited for the recs!

And why is there no mention of pants? I thought science fiction rpf always involved pants.

And, hmmmn to the femslash. I sometimes confuse what occurs in my head with what people have actually written, so it might be just the one. (You're talking about the new one, yes?) Though that seems unfair. But the same is true for SGA fpf femslash, so.
