Why this must be read: This is definitely not a pairing I would normally read because I have some major issues with the idea of Joey being in a present-day gay relationship, what with being married and child-having and all. Except that the author managed to make all my issues with the pairing into JC's issues, which Joey then has to overcome through some trickery and awesomeness. But mostly what I love about this are the characterizations. JC is weird and freaky without being annoyingly spacey; he has thoughts and theories (about Disney Princesses) that are intricate and detailed and make him ten times more interesting than he might even be in real life. And Joey is sneaky and wonderful; by the end I am really rooting for their relationship and I believe in the possibilities because the author really does manage to assuage all doubts as to the perfection of the pairing.
"What? No. I don't have any fetishes."
"Oh, come on. You have a bigger hard-on for alien chicks than even Captain Kirk."
"Shut up."
"Why-yi-yi-yippie--"
Several shoppers looked over at them curiously.
JC elbowed him.
"Stop it. It's not about the alien chicks."
"No, I get it. Green girls are hot. I'm not judging you."
"It's the technology."
"You can't like probes better than girls."
JC's shoulders were tense. He rubbed the back of his neck and looked around.
"It's the design aesthetic, okay? The sci-fi, space-age aesthetic. It's... appealing. In their technology, form disguises function. Everything's sleek and smooth and looks like they were meant to be touched all over. They invite it. Their form invites it, demands it, and you have to pick them up and touch them just to figure out what they are."
Talking about it in public made him uncomfortable. He nudged Joey towards the back of the store.
"I think it's because we, as a society, envision the future as a sterile place where individuals don't touch each other very much. Technology becomes sensual to compensate--"
"Whoa, JC."
JC blinked.
"Sorry, I just--"
"I just wanted to know which you like better. The girls? Or the probes?"
"It's apples and oranges--"
No, that would only confuse the issue. How should he explain it?
"It's sex and sex. You can't compare something with its self, not like that. And there's very little about sex that I don't like."
