Why this must be read: I could easily fill this entire month with recs for penknife. She's just that good. "Undercurrents," in particular, is a wonderful character study of James:

He does not think about Elizabeth. There have been times when he's wondered what it would be like to bed a woman he loves, but this time he finds that being more thoroughly drunk than usual does wonders for preventing such lines of thought.
