valderys and I'll be driving the Stargate Atlantis van for the next month. I signed up for this pretty much forever ago, which potentially indicates how long I've been in the fandom (actually, about 3 years :) I'm afraid I'm almost entirely a McShep girl, and that means most of my recs will be too, although I've found at least one that isn't - and I may look for others through the month. Anyway. Lets start things off with...
Fandom: STARGATE ATLANTIS
Pairing: McKay/Sheppard
Length: Mediumish Oneshot, but the source material is longer

Why this must be read:
I can't believe this hasn't already been recced! This fic hit fandom like a bomb at the time -everyone was reccing it and talking about it. It raises some comparatively uncomfortable issues, and although ostensibly offering an interesting AU in a BDSM-based world, it's really talking about issues more fundamental than that - to do with prejudice, and human rights, and feminism, and assumptions. It's also the most touching and heart-aching love story.
John entered the Air Force Academy in 1987; it was only the third year subs were accepted into the flight program. John wasn't the only one in his class, but he was the only one who looked like he did, and it didn't make him any friends.
