Why this must be read:
I'm not, as a whole, vastly enthusiastic about romantic relationships in fic, but every so often I come across a story that's just so good, I throw my personal preferences to the wind. This is one of those stories. It's very short (a mere 550 words, so I won't quote from it), and every single word in it is perfect. It looks at the development of Napoleon and Illya's relationship, from the first time they have sex to contented old age, and the way they struggle to fit their feelings for each other into a life that doesn't have a place for them. It's beautifully done, in a cool, detached tone that is absolutely right for the subject matter, and the last line is superb in its simplicity and, well, clarity.
