Ok, back to the classics :) Trin has again been deservedly recced a bunch of times, but I wanted to wave my hands frantically and point, lookee here! at DDD. It's my favourite of hers and I suspect that's because I love the way the themes are so dark, and yet are handled so well, and there's a fantastic happy ending that just makes me want to punch the air!
In this AU, DADT policy makers have invented a chip that gives an electric shock to anyone who even touches another person of the same sex. It's wonderful seeing Rodney's gradual realisation of actually how apalling this is, and then his determination to do something about it. John's repressed longing and their gradual exploration of each other despite the chip just makes me hold my breath.
He was aware of the controversy surrounding the application of DADT policy to an international expedition — and an international expedition to another galaxy at that — but in the end, it didn't matter. Everyone got the chip, or they didn't go.
