An Unfinished Universe by nos4a2no9 (NC17)

*clears throat* Hey there. My name is [livejournal.com profile] akamine_chan and I'm going to be your due South driver for the month.

This fandom has the most amazing writers around and I'm glad to be showcasing some of the best fics out there. I looked thorough the memories and tags for due South and was kinda surprised at what I found. Or, what I didn't find. Some of our fantastic active writers hadn't been recced. Ever.

Don't get me wrong, I love all the writers of this fandom, even the ones who've moved on. Their names (just to name a few) are familiar and cherished : [livejournal.com profile] cesperanza, [livejournal.com profile] kelliem, [livejournal.com profile] resonant8, [livejournal.com profile] aukestrel, [livejournal.com profile] thisisbone and [livejournal.com profile] cimmerians. These writers are part of the foundation of this fandom and they set the standard of what good writing should be. And if you haven't read the works of these authors, you really should.

But where are the [livejournal.com profile] dsudiss and [livejournal.com profile] hth_the_firsts of this "generation" of writers? They're here, busy writing, and I'm going to show you how brilliant they are.

I had two criteria in selecting the fics to rec: the author had to be someone who hadn't ever been recced for due South here at the [livejournal.com profile] crack_van and they had to have written something in the last six months.

Let me start by introducing the shining star of our fandom, [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9.

Fandom: DUE SOUTH
Pairing: Benton Fraser/Ray Kowalski
Length: 2,905 words
Author on LJ: [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9
Author Website: A Fish Out Of Water
Why this must be read: Because [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9 is a wonderfully talented writer, lyrical and expressive. She has an amazing skill at weaving the emotions in her stories, capturing the soul of the characters and breathing life into them. She's not afraid to break her characters, realizing that sometimes they just can't be fixed.

I had a hard time choosing just one of [livejournal.com profile] nos4a2no9's stories to rec - they are all wonderful.

This one is special. This one has gained quite a reputation in the fandom and we tease her endlessly about it. But I still cry every time I read it, at the heart-wrenching beauty of it, the realism and hope and determination.

Even the faint crackle of long-distance humming underneath Fraser's voice stops bothering him after a while. And slowly, eventually, Ray discovers he is able to speak, to tell Fraser things and make jokes and act like things are...well, not normal, because living a half-life isn't normal for anyone, but he starts to be able to fake it. He's able to forget during those Sunday phone calls that together they were a force to be reckoned with.

And that bad things happened when they were apart.
