Firefly Overview
First, I want to say how impressed I am with those who have gone before me. You all kick ass! I’m sorry this has taken so long, but I’m lazy and LJ ate my post… twice! I hope it was worth the wait!
Also I struggled with how much of the plot of the show I should give away. I decided to be pretty vague about the plots of specific episodes. I really encourage people to watch the show. It’s tons of fun and the dvds are coming out soon. Watch, read the amazing fic, drool over all the pretty people.
So, Firefly…
Introduction
It’s a Joss Whedon show that was on Fox last season and got cancelled (sniff) half way through the year. However, all the episodes including 3 that were never aired are going to be released on DVD this December and a big screen movie is scheduled to be released late next year. I’m hoping for NC-17 rating for full frontal nudity, but I’ll settle for lots of butt shots.
Note: One of the things that makes the firefly fandom tricky is that there were 11 episodes aired and 3 episodes that were never shown in the US, but the 3 unaired episodes were shown in England and I think will be shown in Canada. Also the 3 unaired episodes were auctioned on Ebay and I think can be downloaded so many people have seen them. And to make it even more complicated, Fox aired the episodes out of order (‘cause they’re dumbasses) including showing the pilot last and some of the episodes had to be modified because of Fox’s stupid order, but they are going to be restored for the DVD.
If I talk about something that happened in the unaired episodes I’ll be sure to specify.
Also, I’m going to try my best to be unbiased, but I’m sure this is going to be very slashcentric because it’s a pretty damn slashy show. And this is probably going to be long because I have difficulty shutting up. So I apologize in advance.
Overview: Vague Spoilers
The show takes place several centuries into the future. Earth has been destroyed and people live on various planets and moons spread out through the galaxy. The government is called the Alliance and they are portrayed as being not necessarily EVIL, but evil as all big, scary governments can be. The show starts several years after a rebellion against the Alliance. The rebels were called Browncoats and they got their asses kicked by the Alliance after an apparently bloody, ugly war. The decisive battle was in a place called Serenity Valley (take notes, there will be a quiz later).
The Alliance stronghold is referred to as the Core and consists of wealthy planets strictly governed and policed. The Rim is where everyone else goes and is very similar to the Wild West, except in space (and they’re all gay). People are poorer, there is much less technology, and there are lots of pretty, pretty (gay) outlaws with guns (and sometimes horsies!). There is also a strong Chinese influence on all the various worlds. Clothes and decorations often have a Chinese accent and all the characters appear to be also fluent in Chinese, but they tend to use it mostly to swear (added bonus of Firefly: learning to swear in Chinese).
Our lovely heroes live aboard a Firefly (yay! name of show) class spaceship called Serenity. It is not a fancy ship. I would almost call it the VW Bus of spaceships but without the hippie connotations. The Captain and the First Officer are both rather bitter veterans of the war. At the beginning of the show they take on additional passengers: a preacher with a questionable past and a young (pretty!) Doctor and his sister who are fugitives wanted by the Alliance. More importantly, they are wanted by creepy men with blue hands that make people spontaneously bleed to death with a creepy little machine.
Most plots revolve around either the crew of Serenity trying to make money by committing crimes large, (stealing drugs from Alliance hospital) odd, (smuggling cows) and small (smuggling bobble-head dolls). Also, many plots center on the doctor and his sister’s status as wanted fugitives. Of course, romantic entanglements also play a key role, but I will get into that more when I discuss the characters.
Characters: Vague Spoilers
Malcolm (Mal) Reynolds (also known as Captain Tightpants) played by Nathan Fillion - He is the Captain of Serenity and for reasons that will never be known, but for which we are very, very grateful wears very, very tight pants. He still has a great deal of bitterness about losing the war and unsurprisingly hates the Alliance, but he is also not entirely comfortable with the criminal element he deals with. He can be a big huge asshole and extraordinarily ruthless: in the pilot episode he is rude, bullies, punches, seriously threatens to kick people off his ship and basically leave them to die, kills someone in cold blood and casually disposes the body, gives approval for someone to be tortured, and kills a horsey. Of course, most of the actions are at least somewhat justifiable and he can also be ridiculously brave and adorable and he is very loyal to and protective of his crew. However, it would be fair to say he is not the most mentally stable person to ever Captain a space ship and Mal would be the first to acknowledge his lack of stability.

Zoe played by Gina Torres – Zoe is the first officer and fought along side Mal in the war. She is extremely loyal to him, but doesn’t hesitate to tell him when he’s being a moron. She is married to the ship’s pilot and their relationship is loving, but sometimes troubled. She can kick all sorts of ass and most people are very intimidated by her

Wash played by Alan Tudyk – Wash is the pilot. He is the most laid back person on the crew and an amazing pilot (and he plays with cute dinosaur toys). He is probably the most peace loving member of the crew. He is madly in love with Zoe and has really nice arms (which as nothing to do with being madly in love with Zoe, I just wanted to mention his arms). He is the poster child of using humor as a defense mechanism. He also has some jealously issues and often resents Zoe’s relationship with Mal. However, they are most often a sweet couple and have one of the loveliest marriages on television.

Kaylee Frye played by Jewel Staite – Kaylee is the ship’s mechanic. She is cheerful and adorable and friendly. She has a very casual attitude towards all the crime and danger the crew is involved with, but is rarely involved with the truly dangerous stuff. She also has the sexy tomboy thing going on. Everyone loves Kaylee and Mal seems to be especially protective of her and treats her like a little sister. Kaylee has a huge crush on the doctor. She also really, really loves strawberries.

Jayne Cobb played by Adam Baldwin (not one of those Baldwins! A different and better class of Baldwin) – Jayne is a mercenary. He has a large gun that he calls Vera. That really almost says all you need to know. He was lured away from another gang by an offer of better money and accommodations. He is rude and obnoxious and likes to act like all he cares about is money, but he seems to genuinely like and respect at least some of the crew. He has a great deal of respect for Mal and though he complains about things a lot, always backs down to Mal and seems genuinely afraid of him at times.

Inara Serra played by Morena Baccarin- Inara is a Companion or if you want to be crude about it a Space Whore. She had cushy space whore job in the Core, but left it for some undetermined reason. She travels with the crew, space whoring around the galaxy. She’s in love with Mal, but will not admit it and Mal is in love with her and won’t admit it. He doesn’t like that she’s a high class space whore and she doesn’t like that he’s an obnoxious petty crook. It’s all very angsty. They yell a lot. She is very close with Kaylee and is friendly with most of the crew. Her status as a companion (space whore!) helps the crew out at times by getting them access to people and places they wouldn’t have access to otherwise. I have nothing else to say about Inara, but I just want to say space whore one more time.

Book played by Ron Glass - He’s a preacher who seems to know way too much about fighting, crime, and the Alliance. It’s never revealed exactly why he’s on the ship, but he is most definitely not just a preacher. He clashes with Mal occasionally because Mal lost his belief in God when they lost the war. He’s also kind of annoying, so I’m not going to say anything more about him.
I just realized that I don’t have any pictures of him. I don’t hate him that much. I just couldn’t find any pictures that I liked.
Dr. Simon Tam played by Sean Maher – He is ridiculously pretty and wonderfully sarcastic and in one episode walks around without his shirt on. It’s a very good episode. Simon was a surgeon living with his wealthy family on the core planets. His younger sister was a genius who got recruited to go to some sort of special school. He got strange letters from her that he figured out meant that they were hurting her and that she needed help. His parents wouldn’t believe Simon, refused to help, and basically disowned him. Simon was able to make some underworld contacts and was able to get his sister smuggled out of the icky place. Simon and his sister became wanted fugitives with a large reward. Simon’s place on the crew is somewhat tenuous. Mal initially resents the trouble he brings to his ship, but warms to him (I am trying so hard to resist being slashy right now, but it’s hard… hee I said hard) and considers Simon to be a member of the crew. Jayne does not feel the same loyalty. Kaylee loves Simon and actively pursues him, but Simon for the most part refuses her advances (‘cause he is so, so gay… okay I gave up). Simon is insanely loyal and protective of his sister and will do anything for her. He has a bad habit of hurdling himself at people when she’s in danger. He seems to like most of the crew and has a wonderfully slashy/hostile relationship with Jayne. Simon and Mal have a peculiar relationship (love! It’s love!). Mal often singles Simon out for attention (and checks out his ass). Simon sometimes missed being at home, but for the most part has adapted well to his new life. He’s an amazing doctor and also excellent at planning crime. And did I mention that he’s pretty? ‘cause he is.
Um… I guess it’s kind of obvious who my favorite character is.

River Tam played by Summer Glau – Last, but certainly not least. River is Simon’s sister. She’s crazy. It is revealed during the course of the show that her brain was cut into several times. Ouch! Simon tries to find medicine that will help and has varying degrees of success. She seems to be psychic and knows things that she shouldn’t. She also can shoot a gun with scary accuracy. She loves her brother and his very close with Kaylee. She also seems to be very aware of her situation. She knows she is crazy and remember how she used to be. It’s very sad (I’m actually not being sarcastic here, River has some amazing scenes and Summer Glau does a kick ass job).

Other Characters:
Badger – He is their contact for many of their crimes. He’s rather shady and doesn’t like Mal that much.
Niska – Sadistic Crime Lord ™ who likes torturing people including Mal and Wash. Happily they are shirtless when they get tortured.

Saffron (also calls herself Yolanda and Bridget)– A slight crazy, beautiful con-artist who in one of the unaired episodes orders Mal to strip naked giving us Naked!Mal. We are eternally grateful to her. Her favorite con is to pretend to be a helpless innocent and the marry men to steal from them. She has lipstick that when she kisses people with it, they pass out.

Reavers – We only ever see their ships and the results of their handiwork. They are psycho cannibal people and everyone is terrified of them. Zoe explains: If they take the ship, they'll rape us to death, eat our flesh and sew our skins into their clothing and if we're very very lucky, they'll do it in that order.
Jubal Early – Bounty Hunter who comes after River and Simon. He is left for dead after one of the episodes, but the body is never seen so he was probably meant to be seen again.

Blue Hand Men- They are men who wear blue gloves. River is terrified of them. They work for the government, but probably not any official part of it.

Serenity – Like any good space ships, Serenity functions like another member of the crew. She doesn’t have guns or anything fancy, but she’s a good ship and does her job well.

Other bits and Slash details
- In the pilot episode, Simon smuggles a comatosed River aboard the ship in a box. An Alliance officer tries to arrest him and in the resulting confusion, shoots Kaylee in the stomach. Simon threatens to refuse to treat Kaylee if Mal lets Simon be taken in by the Alliance. Mal gets pissed (there is punching involved, don’t get me started on the punching, I have passionate punching opinions), but becomes more sympathetic when River is discovered and he understands that Simon is trying to protect his sister. Mal eventually offers Simon a place on his crew with the understanding that he will keep River under control. They also eye fuck a lot. The first look between these two basically says “Hey Baby! How ya doing? Let’s fuck.” Sadly they don’t. At least on screen.
- Jayne initially distrusts Simon and seems to resent the trouble he causes. He enjoys teasing Simon a bit too much and loves to accidently bump into Simon. Whether it’s because he wants to annoy Simon or just likes to touch him is up to the viewer to decide. At one point in the show Jayne betrays Simon and River, but he does seem to regret it, and in a fabulously slashy scene in one of the unaired episode that involves bondage, Simon and River makes sure Jayne never betrays them again.
- Something bad happened to Inara in the past, but we never learn what it is. She is wary of forming complicated relationships with people and seems to get upset when babies are mentioned leading to much speculation. She is pretty obvious about her feeling for Mal and Mal clearly has affection for Inara, but seems to have difficulty understanding why someone would find him attractive and worthwhile. Our Captain has some self-esteem issues.
- Kaylee likes sex. Okay that’s not really important, I just feel bad that she really doesn’t get any. She needs to get a better functioning gaydar. She is very obvious and direct about her crush on Simon. Simon likes her, but fends off her advances.
- The rebellion that Mal and Zoe were a part of is still a major issue. In the first episode that was actually shown, people are celebrating the day the rebellion was defeated and Mal starts a large bar room brawl in defiance. People from their past pop up and Mal especially seems to still be fighting the war. Zoe also, at one point, refuses to set foot on an Alliance planet.
- Blue Hand men are part of the government, but they do not seem to be an official part. They kill a bunch of government people who have found out too much about River. We never find out exactly why they wear the blue gloves, but they are very, very creepy.
- One of the unaired episodes has boy whores! Again, not important, but boy whores make me happy.
An argument for the Slash with words and pictures:
Mal, Simon, and Jayne are ridiculous. The sexual tension is off the charts. Not only do they stare at each other lustfully but they say things like:
MAL
There ain't a one of
us looks the part more than the good Doctor.
I mean, the pretty fits, soft hands, definitely
a moneyed individual. All rich and lily-white,
pasty all over...
SIMON
All right. Fine. I'll go. Just stop describing me.
And
JAYNE
(to Simon)
'Bout time you broke in them pretty shoes.
(to cattle)
Yah! Get along!
MAL
You know, they walk just as easy if you
lead 'em.
JAYNE
I like smackin' 'em.
And
SIMON
(whispering, to Jayne)
If those officers hadn't been armed,
I think you'd have had a chance.
JAYNE
A guy shoves me, I shove him. Not like
I was trying to mount a rescue.
SIMON
Still. I appreciate you trying.
JAYNE
You know what I'd appreciate? You stop
flapping that pretty mouth at me. I'm
trying to figure a way out of here; can't
do it with you yammering.
And now the pictures:

Fic links
The major fic pairing are Mal/Simon; Simon/Jayne; Mal/Simon/Jayne; Mal/Jayne; Simon/Kaylee; Mal/Inara; there are also some Zoe/Wash and an occasional Kaylee/Jayne; Inara/Simon; Wash/Simon; and pretty much any possible combination.

Two Evil Monks Guide to Firefly
If I forgot any thing or if anything is at all confusing please tell me. Fic recs starting tomorrow. I also hope I have managed to convey how truly awesome and fun this show is. The actors are pretty and more importantly can actually act. The stories are fun with the perfect about of angst and the dialogue is witty. There are dvds in December and a movie next year. Love the gay space cowboys and you will be richly rewarded. I again apologize to all the non-slashers out there. I promise to rec some good het too.
Also I struggled with how much of the plot of the show I should give away. I decided to be pretty vague about the plots of specific episodes. I really encourage people to watch the show.

Haven't seen it, so I can't tell if they're on crack. (Nothing ever airs here, it's not my fault.)
