Why this must be read:
Oh, I love this fic.
This is a compilation of pain and things that hurt so much it burns. I've re-read it so many times, and every time it leaves me a messy pile of tragedy. Plus, it has references to Sylvia Plath poetry (Lady Lazarus) and Margaret Atwood's short story, "Happy Endings," one of my favorite short stories ever. All of this pushes it over the edge into epic win category. It was nearly impossible to pick an excerpt, because my favorite parts are so many and so BIG and oh, just read it please.
That night is full of heat, despite Edward’s skin, and she’s able to (thankfully) surrender herself to the depth and breadth of his love. He worships her, and she wonders if he’ll offer the same adulation at the altar of a dead goddess. She’s like Persephone to his Hades, but soon she’ll be a queen of the night in her own right.
The transformation itself is nothing spectacular; she’s feverish for most of it, as she dies and is resurrected. Ever the bibliophile, she mutters lines under her breath.
Herr God, Herr Lucifer
“What’s that?” Carlisle asks.
Beware
Edward frowns and strokes the back of her hand. “I don’t know,” he murmurs.
Beware.
“It’s a poem,” Rosalie says suddenly. “Sylvia Plath. Lady Lazarus.”
Out of the ash -
-
She makes a list of the best and worst things about her new body.
Best:
The strength. The speed. The senses. The power.
Worst:
(Corpse.)
