Some Life That We’ve Chosen by das-kabinett (PG-13)
Fandom: Rent
Pairing: Mentions of Benny/Allison, pre-Roger/April, Maureen/random chick.
Author on LJ:

Why this must be read: Set two years before Rent begins. Back when Benny, Collins, Mark, and Roger all lived in the loft, before Maureen, April, and Benny becoming an ass. Basically, Mark has to go back home for his sister’s wedding. The main reason I love this story is because of the well-written relationships. There’s flawless banter that makes me laugh each time I read it. You can see Mark, Roger, Benny, and Collins' friendship, even though there are hints of what’s to come. They're roommates who steal each other's food and borrow clothes without asking.
"I thought the point was to get your parents to have a homophobic freak-out and not guilt you into coming again," Collins said. "Which, by the way, ten points for being passive aggressive."
"You don't have a Jewish mother, it's defense."
"I object to your stereotyping," Collins said.
"I object to your face," Mark said.
"You need to sleep."
