This story was originally posted for the Life on Mars Ficathon in 2007 to a prompt I gave. It far exceeded my expectations. This is a deeply unsettling and yet hopeful story about Sam searching for answers in a post-apocalyptic world.



The dark was, on this particular night, remarkably oppressive; the shapes of derelict buildings seemed to press onto Sam with their sharded faces and glinting broken windows, like a metal and redbrick jungle, and the rustle of tiny rodents became the soundtrack of his slow march across the street.
