Why this must be read:
There are less than a handful of really long plotty Firefly fics. That reason alone may have been enough to get me to rec it, but it's the natural feeling of it that clinches the deal. Character asides, faux-western speech and new bits of world-building are as smoothly blended together as they were in any episode.

For myself, curiously, it's not really the plot (which carries an author's warning for mature themes, including sexual violence) that makes this such a good story. It's the individual scenes and lines that stick in my head, and I found myself far more fascinated by the crew moments than the pairing ones (really this is more of a gen fic than a het fic). This story veers between flashbacks and present-day as well as between humor and darkness in a way that offers a little something for everyone.
