Why this must be read: Mello/Matt is my other favorite pairing from Death Note (after L/Light) and this story illustrates the reasons why. Matt has to be the single most utilized minor character in any fandom ever. He has less 'screen time' than anyone, but his personality comes through so clearly... and his obvious feelings for Mello.

It's hard to love someone that only loves you back the best they can.


Author's Summary: Sometime it's better to not know what's going to end up killing you.

“You don’t have a choice; you’re addicted.”

“…I could quit.”

Mello scoffed in disbelief, standing up so brusquely that his chair was knocked backwards; it scraped and slid across the linoleum floor until friction brought it to a sudden stop.

“The only thing that’ll free you from your addiction is your death.”

Mello said this flippantly as he turned and stalked to the door. His steps were noticeably stiff, and he winced every time the pointed edges of his leather clothing scraped against the raw, still-healing scar along the right side of his body.

Matt nodded gravely to himself. If his past experiences were anything to go by, Mello was probably right.
